Would you drive the Ca. coast starting from...

Would you fly into Portland, Or. and drive down the coast leaving from San Diego? Or would you fly into SD and leave out of Portland? I just don't want to start with the warm sunny weather and end up in the cooler misty rain. Is that the way it is in Or. at the end of June? Many people have talked about the drive south being worse on the driver and I want my husband to enjoy it too. Thanks for you help.

I live in Seattle and drive the coast two or three times a year. Both drives are great, but the drive from south to north eliminates a lot of sun in the eyes.

Actually, you need to know about the June Gloom in southern California. Leaving SoCal in June means you'll probably hit the sun somewhere around the Bay Area, then it will continue nice farther north, not the other way around.

Rain happens along the Pacific coast. That's why there are big trees there.

yes - don't assume the southern portion of your trip will be any sunnier than the northern leg.

Besides the "June Gloom", If it is hot in the Central Valley, it can be VERY foggy all along the CA coast (often, the hotter it is inland the colder/foggier it is in the bay area). On the other hand - if it is mild inland the coast can be glorious.

But you won't know until a few days or a week before your trip . . . . .

it's a gorgeous drive. if possible, keep your morning drives flexable. if it's foggy, it may clear up by 11:00 a.m. or so. one year i drove down third week of may. it was so foggy on the coast, we saw almost nothing until around noon.
