Would someone explain $9 flight from Fla. to NY?

Someone I know just bought tickets on Spirit from South Florida to NYC for $9. It was on the airline website. Coworkers of mine say this is not unheard of. Would someone please explain just what the heck is going on?

This sort of airfare does happen every now and then. When I was living in Australia there was a $1 fare between Sydney and Melbourne. The only catch was that it was a one way fare and the return portion of the flight was at normal price. I imagine that this is what your friend has bought. Don't forget that the $9 probably has additional taxes and fuel surcharges to. It is a way for an airline to get seats filled up on what might be a new flight or destination? Hope this helps...

And sometimes there are just errors on web sites. I had several friends fly $149 ROUND TRIP to Paris from Honolulu a few years back. The airline announced it was a mistake, but honored the tickets booked.

Thanks for the replies. Just wanted to point out, this was a rountrip fare.

Oh, then that really WAS a good deal! I was thinking $18 was a little steep.

Spirit is having some sort of anniversary sale (or maybe they are calling it something else). Each day they are offering a fare like this in limited quantities for a very specific itinerary - I got some sort of email about this from them and deleted it - wich I had more details.
