Would mid-May be a good time to visit San Francisco and coast?

I know Oct. is considered the ideal time to visit, but would mid-May be good? We are thinking about spending a few days in San Francisco and then driving south along the coast toward Carmel. Good idea in May?

Any ideas for 9-day trip appreciated, too. Thanks!

We did a trip in April and another at the end of May between LA and SF and lucked out with perfect weather both times. I'm not sure when the "marine layer" usually is in, but would avoid the drive if it were in the forecast.

Just north of SF are Muir Woods National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore, both worth a trip.

Along the coast road are lots of fantastic state parks, like Point Lobos, Nuevo Ano, Julia Pffifer to name a few.

May is an excellent time. Usually nice weather and wildflowers in bloom. Of course any months of the year, except sometimes winter months, you may have intermittent fog along the coast. Always dress in layers in these areas.

The last time we went to San Francisco was May 2000-something and we had lovely weather.

Our weather has been very unusual, SanSaf, for example we haven't had rain since I can't remember when as I am sure MichelleY will agree with. Last year we had spring like weather during winter also and spring had lots of rain which made it feel like winter but I don't remember about May. Since MichelleY said May would be good weather I assume it would be. Have a lovely trip!

It snowed at our cabin Memorial Day last year (remember that clearly!) so it was raining in May. But it doesn't always, and there's no way to know in advance of course.

Deb maybe you should schedule a visit I'm sure the ski resorts in the Sierra would be more than happy to have you bring rain. They are beginning to use the D word!!!

You don't give details about what you like to do. If you like hiking, be sure to go to Pt Reyes (about half hour from SF). Likewise, not sure what you'd like in SF. Golden Gate Park is my favorite and I spend a lot of time there. DeYoung art museum is right across from Academy of Sciences; both have recently been rebuilt and worth a morning or afternoon in each. You can get a great view of the city from the DeYoung tower. Ferry to Angels Island is a great trip, and you can see where the immigrants were housed. Very poignant. May weather is usually great. It's been totally dry for months, but has started pouring rain today. Drenching right now. Good for the wildflowers!

Here are some photos I took in May a couple years ago in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Carmel, and Point Lobos:
