stever-Not that I like it, yet can understand for NYE. Some restaurants have a 72 hr cancel or you'l be charged policy every day. Here's from the French Laundry in Napa County:

"If guests are to cancel their reservation within three days of
the reservation, date there will be a $100.00 cancellation fee per
person. Our dress code is no jeans, tennis shoes, shorts, or t-shirts.
Jackets are required for gentlemen. The French Laundry is unsuitable for
children 5 and under. For more information please go to
www.frenchlaundry.com

The French Laundry requires a credit card to hold all online
reservations. Please note that if the number of people in your party decreases
you will be charged a fee of $100 per person.

So, if your party of 4 becomes a party of 2, you are charged $200 for walking in the door-Yikes !
