World Series in Chicago ?!?
WOW!!!
Who would have thunk :-D Anyway, congrats to the White Sox!!! I'm not even a baseball fan, but since I'll be up there next Sunday to watch the Bears destroy the Ravens, I will try to actually see a World Series game after the Bears game. Once again, CONGRATS to the White Sox!!! |
I'd rather it was the Cubbies, but at this point ANY Chicago team in the Series is wonderful!!! :)
|
Agreed, mamajo. I'd rather it was the Cubbies, but I'm a very excited Chicago baseball fan. Unfortunately, I was one of the thousands who couldn't get a ticket but I'll be avidly watching it from home or a bar, toasting my lovely city. ((B))
|
As a Red Sox fan I am disappointed we won't be repeating. But I'm rooting for the White Sox all the way. The team seems to want it more than any other team in MLB. Good luck and have fun!
|
Needless to say, it's ME. SMILING!
When the Cubs were in the playoffs or close, I have always rooted visibly for them- but please no mentions here, please. This is our time. But even some of the media people IN CHICAGO, have to preface their "way to go" with a Cubby comment. NOT NOW. Isn't it enough that they have the station (WGN) the national coverage and following from this, the money empire (TRIBUNE) etc.? Excuse me, please. Yes, a Napoleon complex, and well deserved. I can't even get my White Sox on a dish in MI unless their playing Detroit, for God's sake. And on MSN and lots of stations as soon as the Yankees,Boston fell out the coverage immediately went to football and basketball pre-season. Disgusting. Sorry for any negativity at this time. I can root for a good Cubs team, but just get on the bandwagon already everybody- no need to preface. It sure is fun up here. And one of my kids is in Sports Heaven. He is going to a Bears game at noon and a World Series the same night. OUR WORLD SERIES. Old men are waxing poetic about the writing going onto the field. My father still has not talked to me yet. I've only got the baseball call from my mother. I'm waiting. My flags are flying in two states and my banners (one is a 1996- 90 year 1906 commemorative pennant) are on my Saturn's side windows. This is really, really fun. And mostly because of how this team IS. Good people and not just great players. Their heads are all the right size and they did not lash out at each other during some very bad weeks. It was a great season and it is going to be a great World Series, rain or not. I wish we could all sing the "Go, go, go White Sox" song together! |
I am definitely on the bandwagon, and it is FUN! Just wanted to sharew a small funny story: my cabdriver in San Francisco yesterday (originally from Bulgaria) said he had never HEARD of the White Sox before, and at first thought it was just a funny reference to the Red Sox. But he's rooting for us, now that he knows we exist!
|
I routed for the uh ... other team too when they made their run, but I'll be so happy if we get it before them, they always have 'next year' ;)
I'm happy too, unfortunately I'll be watching the game from a bar, and while I like living on the northside now, part of me wouldn't mind heading back down to my old south-side/ south-suburban stomping grounds to watch it properly. I know a lovely bar in Beverly that would be just perfect, but I know I won't make it down there for that. |
Some of my old neighbors in Chicago Ridge, are heading to their Merionette PK location, Vittrad. The ones in Orland Park, Palos and Tinley are letting the kids take over the bars and restaurants and many are coming by me at the game when I am home. I can't imagine how places like Harrisons in Orland are going to be. It won't be tame.
There is an hilarious piece in today's Southtown (if you can get it). It's the paper that advertises "The North Side Just Doesn't Get It!"- but I have diverged again. The article is the latest demographics about the opposing Chicago baseball fans. Do you know the income is almost identical, as are ages and education levels. The one biggest difference was if you had a parent or grandparent (and the average age for both fans is 45) that worked in the trades, mills, or industry. When I went to get some Italian beef sandwiches at 179th & Wolf Rd. yesterday, Vittrad- they were already starting a party within the shop. This is serious fun like I have never seen in our workaholic, over-achiever environs. ENJOY! |
JJ5 - Ha! that is funny (the demographics comparision) because I think it is true. My father was a construction worker for many years, now he sells equipment and machines to factories.
|
JJ5- take no offense by the "prefacing"- it's only meant to show that even though you wish some other team was in the WS, you are happy enough for the Sox to put that aside and wish them the best. It's way better than indifference which is how I generally treat the WS. It's nice to get behind my city and watch the excitement unfold.
|
Welcome aschie30! I love baseball, and I love to watch the Pony Leagues as well. Isn't it neat to see the SOX lights on the buildings downtown?
And by me I've never seen so many ungrumpy old codgers in their caps. Some of them I hardly recognize without the scowl. You can actually see some teeth when they smile. NOT ALL THE teeth, but some teeth. |
I have to admit I get a little misty-eyed when I read some of the stories in the Trib or hear them on the news. There is always someone who recounts what an avid fan their Mom was, and how she had the misfortune to die last year (peacefully albeit), but before she could see her beloved Sox in the Series. . .
Or someone who talks about going to the WS with Dad, who is practically 105 and has lived his whole life to see this . . . |
y'all are makin me cry...:(( tears of blissful joy for the players AND loyal fans including my own dear dad.
I'm enjoying this time with him so much... we surprised him with a playoff party a few weeks ago... he just wanted us all to be quiet so he could WATCH the game! :D Gotta love it! I'm so glad we got him to the Cell last month... his first game attendance since the strike... sis and I took him (and mom) for his Father's Day gift... it was priceless... just like the old days. Check out this great photo... http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/photo?sl...01&prov=ap We LOVE our city!!! AND COULDN'T BE PROUDER OF OUR WHITE SOX! This is our time... |
Oh rats! I wanted to see your photo makai1, and it came up "no longer available".
GOOD for you- getting your Dad over there. Mine is a stubborn German and is still in protest. Yet he walked to a St. Rita Football game a week ago and now one of his legs will hardly hold him up. I'm going to go put a Sox cap on his head and we'll take some pictures for the GTG. Can't say I'll get him to put his bridge in for the picture though. He does what he wants to do. Bet we score in the first Saturday. |
Try again JJ... but it's not us, it's one of the news photos of the city "in lights".
GO GO WHITE SOX! =D> |
Yah! I'll get some pics of my stubborn german pop for the GTG too... celebration photos. \:D/ Fun fun!
Ahh yes... chalkn' em up in the first!! =D> |
It's amazing how friends and distant relatives call you for tickets now that YOUR team has made the Series!
Go Sox! |
Or how some people both distance AND close (like my Uncle in Clearwater who calls me ever time Tampa Bay wins)- are silent as a tomb.
As AAFrequentFlyer said in the beginning, "Who would have thunk". And we have a very strict dress code in some arenas here, but I have my full black and white jersey head to toe on today. GO SOX! Guys, you should read the stats of the current White Sox players against Clements' pitching. WOA!- it's not good to be TOO optimistic but it doesn't look good for Houston. Aside: I thought the Police Chief's announcement about terrorist procedures etc. around U.S. Cellular Field last night was priceless. He does have a good sense of humor. |
As my screen name attests, I always thought we could make it! Bring it on!
|
"Bet we score in the first Saturday."
You know your boys in black, JJ!! Woo hoo! "He gone"! :D |
Oh my, what a night! My head is splitting right now. And we are doing it again tonight, just in a different location.
Houston, you have a problem! Clemens, schmenems! Joe Crede for President! Na-Na-Na-Na! Na-Na-Na-Na! Hey, hey good-bye! AND if that doesn't make me happy, hear this one: My youngest son has a World Series Ticket for tonight and just gave it to his oldest brother, who has lived to go to a World Series (he's our baseball pitcher)since 1983 when his heart was broken. And he also sold his Bears tickets today as well, so that he could drive my Mom and Dad to our gathering. WOW! If the BlackHawks ever go to the Stanley Cup, Dan will have to buy him a ticket in return, because the youngest is the ice hockey player. I KNEW we were going to score in the first even after two outs. Picasso in Dailey Plaza sculpture is wearing his/her? (is it a dog or an antelope) Sox cap. The Lions in front of the Art Institute are wearing their huge plastic Sox batting helmets, and about 11,000 people are walking around with Ozzie Guillen masks on. This is such a blast! Two aspirin and here we go again! I do not think we are going to get to game 6 for our home stand seats use. But I do not care. It might be Sox in 5 now. G0, GO, GO! White Sox! My lefty blue eyes is going to nail this one today! |
Rain, rain go away- the White Sox need to play today!
|
YOWIE! This is bliss, baseball heaven.
My oldest son was at Game 2- and it was a lifelong dream and I am so happy for him that he went and got the game that he got. A grand slam- "who would have thunk". And PODZILLA kept us out of extra innings and let us come in from the rain. It's cold here today outside but not in our hearts. We are going to remember this always. Pettit, schmetite. Oswald is going to be the only obstacle to a sweep. Paulie, you got to stay with us now! |
That's Oswalt, I never can get those National League players' names right.
AND AAFrequentFlyer WHAT A DAY YOU HAD! The Bears were great on defense and then the NIGHT! I hope you had plastic or heavier on and are now nice and dry and toasty somewhere. And I hope you do not have to work today. I'm here, but it's not going to happen. LOL! |
JJ, what a day in Chicago indeed! Da Bears! =D> And then just down the street to enjoy our "CHICAGO WHITE SOX"!! This is OUR time! When Paulie hit that grand slam, boy, the fans sure got a chance to shake the rain off their ponchos, ey? :D Unbelievable, yet totally believable. "Pod for President" today! **==
So, AAFlyer how about a trip report to keep this thread travel related??!! >:D< |
Wow! What a homecoming! Got back in town on Friday, World Series wins Sat. and Sunday! I am so excited that this city is finally excited for the Sox! It's about time! Go Go White Sox!
|
swalter518, my oldest son got a ticket to Sunday night's game (GAME 2) on Saturday night on e-bay. We were all at his house for a huge party to watch and he was like an 11 year old kid, not nearly 40. He was dancing a jig for about 10 minutes.
What a game he saw! My phone rang about 5 times after Paulie hit the grand slam. Hope you had a great time in Venice and welcome home. If we get past Oswalt, the Sox are going to sweep. I'm glad I left my huge White Sox flag flying in MI now, regardless of the weather. We are going to have fun at the GTG in Dec. And I'm glad you're fine and home once again for the celebrations. |
"G0, GO, GO! White Sox! My lefty blue eyes is going to nail this one today!"
Ok JJ, I assumed you were referring to Buehrle when you said this yesterday... but could it be that Podsednik has "BLUE EYES" ?? :-? |
I think you are right, makai1, and I did mean Buerhle. His are very light blue- in some pictures they almost look colorless.
Don't tell anybody but about a month ago I started called Podsednik, Opie! It's just that sometimes he has that innocent but shocked kind of look on his face- like Ron Howard used to get during the Andy of Mayberry days. Pod is not always the best player on the team, but from the start in April he has always been the most charismatic and rather "ignitable". Is that a word? Well good things spark off of him all the time- and also whenever you least expect it. My sons think Pod is playing hurt- much worse than is reported. Maybe so, but it didn't keep him from being hitterish last night. Two more games! Two more games! |
JJ, no tickets for us but did do a drive through the city yesterday to see all the stuff-the lions, Picasso and the horses. Went early enought to get by Comisky and took tons of pictures of all the pennants, banners and other World Series stuff around the park. What fun-I almost had a heart attack last night!
|
I'm very proud of myself, as I have watched every pitch. My mother can't watch at all- she hides in the back rooms and only lets my Dad tell her the score.
Last night was REALLY a roller coaster, as the Astros are trying HARD. It's the World Series for pete's sake. Save your pictures to show. I'm glad I have a night off. I was so antsy yesterday I ended pulling in half the garden. |
Yowowowowowie!
I don't think they are going to come back home to play, only with laurels upon their brows. White Sox, White Sox, GO GO White Sox! |
I do feel bad for the Houston fans... BUT love the fact that the Sox continue to play as a team... everyone a participant. It was very cool to see the entire roster last night/this am.
Hey has any team ever won the World Series by winning 2 games in ONE day?? >:D< Go Go White Sox |
I don't know, makai1!
One of the announcers outside of the Astrodome was announcing that tonight's game will be like a double header. Hits scored after midnight last night will have the same dates. Yippeeess! |
It is interesting to see how much this series and last year have been similar (is it in the "Sox?"), but a bit closer this year. What is particularly interesting is that this may go down as one of the closest sweeps in history. Certainly lots of drama. It's not over yet though. I don't think we can ever say that after last year's playoffs.
|
That's for sure, Dan. I think that's why I feel so bad for Houston fans... every game has been so close and they have had many opp's to win em... but when it comes down to a 9th or 14th inning homer for the other team... aawwwwhhhhh.
Sure am glad to be rootin' for the "boys in black"! They're fun to watch... I esp. enjoy how relaxed they all are. JOY!! :)>- |
Yes, very relaxed and never over-confident. Also Ozzie is the only one at the park or on tv that you see being emotional a lot of the time.
But I did clearly see/hear that swear from Crede when he got hit with the pitch last night. I never saw him get red and flustered like that before. But it didn't last long, even at that. I have seen Paulie throw a bat in frustration a couple of times. |
