My 17 year old son and I will be going for the first time this year. We will be leaving August 1st and driving from Long Island, NY. Can anyone tell me if there is a good place to stay between Crossville, TN and Albany, KY. I think I might have miss calculated how far we can go in one day.

I live close to the southern end of the Alabama segment. My husband and I always start at the Gadsden end and travel north on the Lookout Mountain Parkway segment. We have some favorite places to stop that we have found during our trips for the past three years. Usually where there are multiple vendors, shade trees, food, and more shade! We do carry water and snacks with us also. It has always taken us all of the first day to get as far as Mentone, AL. However, the past two years we were in rain and decided to drive on to Chattanooga to spend the night. Then we get on 127 and go north. We have stopped in Signal Mtn, Dunlap, at a large field areas with multiple vendors, and in Crossville - which is as far north as we have been able to go in two days. We are planning to go again this year. If it rains, be prepared for muddy parking areas in fields or along the highway shoulders at times. We always find something we like from glassware items, books to wood items like stools, etc. You just have to like looking at a lot of items to find the few you might like. Also by Sat many vendors cut their prices by 50% or will take your best offer. One of the best things about the 127 yard sale, is you can start where you like and go
north or south as the mood strikes!

This is the first time for me and will be the last! For my home state Ohio it was all Baby items at garage sales. They should make a rule that if your going to have Baby clothes plus toys you need to get a Pink or Blue sign and other sales have other colored signs!!
You see a PINK/BLUE sign and your not a Baby garage sale picker keep going! It was a waste of time and gas to keep stopping and it was Baby items!
Next time it will be another state, besides Ohio unless they do something different! I know the in the past the Lincoln Highway Sales that are August 9-11th were awesome in finding good items but who knows it might be a baby items sale this year 2012. I'm sure there are other people that feel the same as I do.

The sale was a ton of fun for us. A pre-planned trip to Alabama had us in the area anyway, so we decided to try it out just for fun.
As with any event, your expectations will color your impression, but we really didn't know what to expect other than "yard sale" activity- including long car lines, slow traffic, stupid jaywalkers, and a wide variety of goods offered- and this event delivered on all areas!
We covered the "Lookout Mountain Highway" in Alabama, Georgia and Temmessee and saw everything from cement wares and broken plates to zebra skins ( the real thing!!!). We also encountered exceptionally friendly people from all over the country, a few jerks, some adorable kids and some unbelievably stupid drivers.
Advice from this participant: take patience aplenty because the driving is necessarily S-L-O-W; have water, sunscreen, bug spray and rain gear in easy reach in the car; be prepared to barter within reason but don't expect miracles as most vendors "know what they have" to offer; have snacks handy for the long stretches where there are no booths along the road as food to purchase is not readily available; port-o-potties are set up at many of the "tent city" type locations with multiple vendors on site and at some small places, but best bet is to "go" whenever the opportuity presents.
Main thing: Don't expect the moon at every stop!!! Its a YARD SALE so expect nothing more and you won't be disappointed.

Hey Bobbi_ Smith, where at in Kentucky? This is what I'm looking for good junk I love this stuff and resale it and do quite well! So if you can give me directions I'm sure that's where I'll be next time. Between Beaverdam and Cairo on old Lincoln highway US 30 the road is closed due to construction. So if your out for the Lincoln highway sales on August 9-11 you need to find another route. An I believe also in Indiana there changing the route outside of Fort Wayne going West. I came across this man from Greenville Oh and showed him this late 1800's mirror with a little girl photo dressed in all white dress with a small white cap and has some type of advertisement underneath of her. He didn't ask me if I wanted to sell it but he called me last night and asked me if I would take $3800.for it! He said its worth 5000. Well it did turn out GREAT for me in Ohio over all. This is the items that I look for pay very very little for it and show someone the items that I have. I wasn't going to sell this mirror because I haven't seen another. But I'm going to let her go to another home I'm very Happy. Thank you Bobbi_ if you could give me directions in Kentucky and good hunting to all.

I was looking for this year's "hot spots" @ the 127 sale and came across this thread. I'm saddened to see all the negative comments. I'm an antique/vintage clothes/action figure collector etc.. and i've been going since 2009, and i always find goodies. You just have to be patient and look! I live close to Crossville, TN so thats where i always start. This year i'm starting in AL and going north. CAN'T WAIT!!

First year I made my husband go kicking and scream, this is our 4th year going and he love its. This is the most fun you can have in a weekend doing nothing but checking out rusty treasures to china imports, yes there are people trying to sell at inflated prices but mostly there are great vendors selling stuff that they love and doing what they love. We have meet some of the nicest people and had a blast doing it . We have found some wonderful Antique treasures at very reasonable prices. It all depends on what you are looking for and how into it you are . We are rusty ,crusty antique hounds...Yes there is digging which I love . We avoid sites with modern items and cloths as we have no interest in that stuff. Its a great weekend, its what you make of it .You will sweat, get dirty, visit with great people, see beautiful country and find some amazing stuff, but if thats not your idea of fun then you should stay home. Im leaving in the morning for this years sale and I cant wait..its going to be a great year .

I'm amazed at the negative comments to as this is one event that never disappoints me. I'll be selling this year, in Dunlap, TN, in fact. It's true that some of the Kentucky routes and even some between Jamestown and Crossville involve narrow, windy roads that some people (like me) find intimidating, there are lots of spots along the route that are good. Dunlap, TN is one of them. Straight, nice roads, lots of easy on and off vendors. If I were doing the sale as a buyer, I'd definitely include Dunlap.

That being said, yes, there is a lot of junk. There would have to be in an almost 700 mile yardsale. It helps to get on facebook and post what you are looking for on one of the groups dedicated to the 127 corridor sale. It can help you narrow down your route.

My advice is not to treat it so much as an opportunity to find treasures as and adventure and fun time.

Welcome to Fodors hnsac. You apparently googled Longest Yard Sale and dug up this very old thread. You will find lots of good info/discussion here -- but it is good to look at the dates.
