WooGo -- Police Escort Hotel Guests Out of Illegal Hotel

The crap is hitting the fan... this just in at tripadvisor:

WHAT A HORROR story. we checked in for a weeks stay 2/5/06, around 10 pm of the night we checked in a notice was slid under the door that woogo had surrendered all 110 rooms that they had in the Herald Towers. The notice was stamped by a notary, and said that if we continued to occupy the room after 5pm on 2/6/06 that we would be trespassing. As soon as the Woogo office opened in the morning I went down there...along with About 100 other people, and was told that it was a scam, not to worry. When we returned to the room around 4 pm the manager of the Herald Towers took us into his office, and explained that Woogo had indeed surrendered the rooms, as they were subletting for periods of less than 30 days, and that violated the agreement that they had w/ The Herald Towers. I again contacted the Woogo office, and Travel Now who I had booked through. Oscar, the Woogo rep came up to our room, told us not to leave it was a "scam", and that he Would be back in about 10 minutes. In the mean time a representative of the Herald Towers arrived at our room with a New York City police officer who escorted us out of the building. The gentleman did give us a $20 bill for a cab. My god...my co worker and I felt like a cheap prostitute!!!!. Woogo is a HUGE sacm....we paid for a weeks reservation, and were literally thrown out on the street in New York, as were at least the occupants of the other 109 rooms. BEWARE..this was the worst, and most humiliating experience of my life!!!!!

Congrats Kelly on pushing the issue.

I'm sorry this happened to guests. I wonder what Expedia, etc. are going to say now.

note: this happened in Feb. at a previous illegal NYC Hotel -- expect to see the same thing at current WooGo properties.

"this just in at tripadvisorquot;

Looks like that review was posted April 10th. Maybe we have differing views on what constitutes "this just in".

Yeesh, what a bunch of scumbags. I look forward to the day when what has just happened to the Enron bosses happens to the WooGo gang.

Wow!

They must be making so much money that they don't care about the consequences.

This WooGo property - "property" being the operative word is a different building than ours being illegally converted into a make shift hotel. As I recall from another forum discussion on tripadvisor - I recall that the previous incarnation of WooGo was "Yourstay.com". I destinctively remember reading a post about this same thing happening when "Yourstay / WooGo" and one of the sleazy landlords the colluded with on converting a building - got into a financial argument because "Yourstay / WooGo" stopped paying the landlord his percentage of the tourist scam profits. The landlord ended up cutting the electricity and water to the tourist units and eventually ended up throwing out all the Yourstay tourists out on the street. May not be the case here - but I remember this deja vu tale.

I fully expect the WooGo folks to run our building into the ground and declare bankruptcy and disappear when the tourist and tenant lawsuits and city violations start to overwhelm them. If the scam goes as their previous incarnations did, they likely already have a new company, new name, and a new set of apartments in NY, LA, London, and Berlin to take over waiting in the wings.

Yes, the "just in" was an over-excited statement on my part. It was "just-in" as just sent to me via email with the words "look what I just found on tripadvisor" -- and I had mistakenly thought it was just recently posted on TripAdvisor when I wrote "just in". I got too excited, too quickly. My apologies.

... Still, what a story -- escorted out of your Hotel by the police! I'm surprised that WooGo story didn't get bigger press.

BTW, We have added a new "Please Help Take Action" section to WooGone.com -- it has easy-to-use links for filing complaints against WooGo.

Take it from the few of us who have taken action -- it feels *really* good!

The hearing for the next building within the WooGo Lincoln Center / West 6rd Realty complex was June 1. Still nothing posted as the result but will monitor. The first hearing and guilty verdict is supposedly costing them $2500 a day - but no effect on the hotel.

Still no official verdict on the second hearing but a visit to the NYC Dept of Buildings website has found a half dozen new citations for failure to obtain new construction certificates (example - converting former tenant penthouses into smaller hotel rooms, etc.), to fire escape deteriorations, to unsafe elevators. The NYC DOB is all over this place. And NYC Councilwoman is holding a rally to save rent stabilized and rent controlled apartments on June 14 7-8:30pm St. Bartholomew's Church / Park Av and 51st St. The WooGo - West 63rd realty con is part of the agenda.
