If you are looking to do some serious shopping in one location then yes, WC is a good destination with about 200 stores.

You can search the names of the stores online. If you're looking for great bargains then no, WC or other outlet malls are not great deals. You can often find the same merchandise at regular stores on sale for less.

It'll take you about an hour to get there. I believe there is regular bus service from the Port Authority bus terminal.

I can't see any reason to stay overnight, but then again I can't see a reason for going there in the first place, but that's just me.

Yes, it's definitely worth a stop. There are about 220 shops there. Check out its website: www.premiumoutlets.com and then find Woodbury Common.
If you are driving, then it might make sense to stay overnight. There is a Hampton Inn adjacent to the center. Where are you driving from?

we will be cominig from Cape Cod. Where it is better to go shopping - NY or WC (best prices) As I understood WC is ideal because there are 200 shops, but what about prices???

Malls are always hit-n-miss.

With few exceptions where you actually get designers first quality merchandise (usually from the past season), what they manufacture for the malls isn't the same as you'd find in their shops on Madision Ave or even stores as Bloomies or Macy's or Nordstrom's, etc.

As to prices... you'd better know ahead of time what to expect (original retail) and then what you're willing to pay.

In fact, I believe there's a mall (not as large at WC) right off I95, heading south thru CT towards NYC. Believe it's about Exit 50 (or thereabouts... I'm never the driver, but know it's south of the Casinos, and north of New Haven, so it's a guess). Maybe someone seeing this will know.

Cape Cod to Woodbury Commons in Harriman NY?
For SHOPPING?

To paraphrase Harry Callahan, "You've got to ask yourself one question:" if you drive from Cape Cod to Harriman, would the amount of money you would save by shopping there, instead of shopping online or at the scores of malls you would pass along the way, be more than the money you would spend (in gas and lodging) by making this drive? According to Mapquest, it's about 250 miles (and five hours) ONE WAY between Sandwich MA and Harriman NY.

Be aware that there is no reason -- legal, ethical, or business -- that an outlet store will have a lower price than a regular outlet for the exact same item. You need to do a LOT of research on the matter, to determine if the items you are looking for can be purchased for less money at Woodbury Commons than online or at a mall just outside of Cape Cod (or in Connecticut or Rhode Island or just north of NYC).

It is apparent that saving money is a major consideration for you. If so, then a trip from Cape Cod to Woodbury Commons may NOT be the best way to do so.

I'll save you a bit of research. From a lot of experience by both my wife and me, I can assure that you can definitely find bargains and save a lot of money at Woodbury Common.
However, as previously noted, it is out of the way if your final destination from Cape Cod in New York City. So, the question is: Is it worth driving an extra (approximately)y two to three hours to go from Cape Cod to Woodbury Common to NYC versus driving directly from Cape Cod to NYC? If you're a serious shopper, then I'd say it just might be worth it.

There ar a lot of bargains at Woodbury Commons but they are usually upscale - so if you want a $600 purse for $325 it's a great idea. If you're looking for moderate/basic stuff it's not really the way to go. (They have quite a few of those shops too - but prices not necessarily less than on sale in the city.) And the best prices/biggest discounts are things that are out of season (heavy discount on summer stuff now - not fall/winter).

I usually go twice a year - when they re having their sales - and stock up on basic while looking for upscale bargains - which is more hit or miss. But for me it's only an hour drive.

There are premium outlets near Cape Cod in Wrentham , MA. Not sure how it compares to Woodbury because I detest such places, but I think it is huge.

Nothing beats Woodbury. I have shopped both on numerous occasions and the Woodbury Outlets simply have the most stores and the most upscale stores. Plan to spend a full day there.

Go to their website and see if the stores there are what you're interested in.

That said, hotel accommodations near Newburgh, NY are on the simpler side. No upscale hotels to speak of.

Driving from Cape Cod to New York, you pass Clinton Crossing Premium Outlets in Connecticut. The website indicates 70 shops, which is less than Woodbury Common, but you can look at the website and see if they are the stores that interest you. http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=12

The Wrentham Village Premium Outlets in Massachusetts are a bit more out of your way, but only by a half hour or so if you drive from the Cape to Wrentham and then to New York. The website doesn't indicate the number of stores (or I couldn't find it) but it appears to be somewhat more than Clinton Crossing. Once again you can check the website to see if there are stores there that are not at Clinton Crossing. http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=10

As far as prices, there is no way of telling you whether you will do better at one of the premium outlet malls or in New York stores. They will have different merchandise at different prices, there may be sales, who knows? It will depend store by store and item by item.

I'll have to disagree with nytraveler. Sure, there are a host of "upscale" shopping bargains available, but there's also opportunities for bargains at what I'll call "less than upscale" shops.
Also, one my wife's favorites stops is at an Eileen Fisher outlet store which is in a mall adjacent to Woodbury Common.

Pricing at outlets is hit or miss and may not necessarily be much cheaper than the retail store. Some (maybe many) stores like Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and Brooks Brothers manufacture a separate line of clothing specifically for their outlet store.

To add to what Jaya said, some "Outlet stores" the merchandise is not always the same quality as the products sold in that same company's "regular store". It may look the same and carry the same designer label but in some cases, especially with clothing, the fabrics and "construction" are slightly different as are the countries where the article is made. You have to be an informed shopper so you'll be able to tell the difference and know if you are getting a real bargain of just a less expensive version of a particular clothing item.

One of the charms of NYC is the hundreds, if not thousands of independent and unqiue stores. Of course, they are not conveniently clustered together and the prices vary widely.

There is not one mall in Manhattan and just the way most NY'ers discourage visitors from going to chain restaurants because of the enormous selection of cuisines and prices, I would suggest the same for clothing.

Eileen Fisher - while not "designer" verges on the upscale (I love her stuff). Many people when they go to outlets what a $50 item for $15 - and this isn't really the place for that. Secaucus has more of that.

nytraveler, I don't understand your post. What do you mean when you say, "....this isn't really the place for that. Secaucus has more of that." What is "that"? The Eileen Fisher store in the mall adjacent to Woodbury Common is an outlet.

If you are wanting to do some serious outlet shopping, I think you are doing yourself a disservice in skipping Woodbury Common. You will certainly not find comparable prices in NYC anywhere (except for electronics, where NYC excels at places like J&R). If you want upscale designer goods (WC has one of the few Space/Prada outlets in the U.S., as well as Gucci, D&G, LV, and many other outlets that are unique on the Eastern Seaboard), you'll find what you want.

I've been to many of the outlet malls mentioned in this thread. Clinton Crossing is nice, but is in no way comparable. And while Wrentham Village is huge, I found all the shops---even those that overlap with WC) to be lackluster in comparison. But as others have pointed out, if you don't want upscale goods, you can still find some bargains much closer to NYC. And it's certainly out of the way to go to Harriman from Cape Cod. But I'd certainly skip the outlets there if you are going anywhere else. The outlets in Secaucus are just as good as those in the Cape, where there are much more interesting things to do than to shop in an outlet mall.

I happen to think Woodbury Commons is a fabulous shopping experience, and would rank it far above any other "outlet" malls. As others have mentioned, you have access to numerous upscale designers at discount prices that you simply don't find at most other outlet centers. And while you may find great buys in NYC, you won't find everything in one location, and would need to really research what's available.

Having said that, I'm not sure if it makes sense for the OP to go there. It's one thing for someone living in the area to make a day trip to Woodbury Commons, and another thing for someone who has limited time and is visiting the area to make such a detour. I'm also not clear whether the OP is flying in to the northeast, in which case there's the issue of how to handle your purchases. I know that if I go for a day, and expecially if I go with friends, we end up with a tightly packed trunk full of treasures. Not something I'd want to try to check on a plane!
