Women travelling in NYC

I will be travelling to New York for 3days on my own i have already selected some plays to see but i was wondering it is unsafe for a woman to travel alone in NYC;my friends think that i'm crazy to do this by myself they think i will be bored or feel unsafe. So i wanted to know if there was any woman who've been to NYC by themselve and if you had suggetion of things to do and places to catch a quick lunch or souper.

Although I'm not a woman, millions of women live and travel alone in Manhattan. I wonder where do you live that you woman friends think you're crazy to come to NYC alone. NYC is safer than most of the cities in the US.

New York has not been dangerous for some time. You are not likely to encounter danger in any of the places you are likely to go (museums, shopping, theatre).
If theatre is going to be your evening activity, I suggest gbooking a hotel in the theatre/Times Square district to make it easy to get "home" at night (by walking).
I live here alone & eat and go places alone all the time. If I were you, I'd suggest eating lunch herever you spend the day, in a museum or department store, which is easy and nice, there's always decent food at an okay price and plenty of people on their own. If you have interests in particular neighborhoods, post and I'm sure you'll get help.
If by "bored" you mean "lonely, I suggest taking tours--Circle Line, the boat around Manhattan, and/or the buses with guides; if you have time for research, I am sure there are tours in museums that might interest you as well.

Not at all crazy. The economy has really cleaned up NYC, the stock market pop translated into jobs for muggers. Our economy in NYC revolves around the stock market. Although our self-stroking mayor would have you believe he did it…. I have been traveling alone for years. I came to NY at 26 from a very rural town with some city experience. It was experience that I had because I would not let people frighten me into always having an escort. This is life, live it!!! I live here alone and all of my country dwelling friends think I am risk taker, stupid there are more people out at 2 in morning in NYC than any rural square I can think of…. No need at all to be alarmed just observe common sense. I would make sure that my hotel is near a residential area. Some of the high-end hotels like the St.Regis and the Plaza are gorgeous but they are in business centers that I think can become deserted when the business day ends. If you already have one of these hotels cab in and out late at night. I would just want to stroll around my hotel at night. The subways are fine but being apprehensive, give yourself some piece of mine at night for $5-$10. No need to stay at your hotel at night because of people’s preconceived notions of NYC. 42nd street never closes and as I am sure your guide books have told you how family oriented it is. I would want to be near the Metropolitan museum of Art one of the most important museums in the western hemisphere. The West Village downtown is also nice as is the Upper West side. Take a double-decker tour to get a lay out of the city on your first day, about $30. A HINT ON THEATRE. You would be very well served to take a ballet or opera at Lincoln Center. Sounds like a snooze I know. I only discovered them 1-2 years ago but the set design and production quality are so high. Nothing I have ever seen on Bway has ever come close to it. You can buy cheap seats up in Balcony but I think Orchestra is so worth the splurge. The Met productions and New York City Ballet are so remind me in quality to the golden days of movies; you know the 20-30’s when so much emphasis is placed on beauty. The lighting in the ballet is blended in hues to compliment the other colors on stage; a ribbon a curtain. I know I am not being clear here. You have to see it, it is one great big AWWWWWWWW! You can see how the very rich in older days used ballet as a sedative to daily pressures. It is art on stage. The bway shows I am sorry to say can sometimes be tourist traps. Not all of them but many cater to busloads of tourist, I think the art gets lost sometimes. Just an opinion.

Just returned from NYC last week. We were three women aged 60-70. Walked and bused all over the city and never felt threatened in the slighest. What really impressed us was the helpfulness and friendliness of the locals - not just the fact that they weren't rude, but that they made the first offers to help with bus lines, information, etc. The bus drivers were the best! We had a wonderful time; go for it. And make sure you walk thru and sit in Central Park. We also managed to eat (eat, not "dine") for about $15-20 each night (portions way too big!). Go ethnic. BTW, I feel sorry for anyone who is bored with her own company - how sad.

I go up to New York by myself all the time. I have never felt unsafe. One place in the theatre district that I enjoy is Joe Allen's -- not too expensive (especially by New York standards), good food, casual ambience, convenient location near many theatres, occasional celebrity-spotting, and I feel very comfortable dining alone there. You can see the menu at http://www.joeallenrestaurant.com/newyork/janymenu.htm.

Thank you so much for all your advices and suggestions,I'm definitely ready to do this i had few doubts b/c of all the negativity comments by some of my friends but after reading this i can say they are all gone. I have no problem to go spend time on my own i went to NYC last year with some friends and it was a total fiasco so that's why i want to do this on my own there is so many things i want to see and visit. I will definitely check some stuff from the Lincoln centre i think they have a festival now and also visit the Museum do you know when is the best time to go? Thanks for the resto link i will go check the menu now

Just a quick question Lisa do you need to reserve for the Joe Allen's Restaurant?

lisa Jul 6th, 2001 12:29 PM

Yes, I would strongly recommend having a reservation at Joe Allen's, especially if you are trying to have dinner before a play. It's a popular spot.

I forgot to mention another place I like that's even less expensive. It's a little walk from the theatre district, on 55th St., but the food is very good and the price can't be beat. It's called La Bonne Soupe. They have a fixed price menu for $13.95 that includes bread, salad, soup, a glass of wine or soda or cup of coffee, and dessert. They also have a regular menu if you prefer to order other things. They have a website at www.labonnesoupe.com.
