Within driving distance of Niagara Falls

Hi,my husband and I are planning a trip to Niagara Falls at the end of July. We are budget conscious, but seek clean and secure accommodations and great restaurants and shopping. Where should we stay and what should we do? We were thinking about the Thousand Island area but how far from Niagara Falls? What about shopping in the area and sightseeing? Also what will weather be like in July? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thousand Islands is around Kingston which is about 2 1/2 hours east of Toronto. Toronto is about 2 hours from Niagara Falls. Niagara-on-the-Lake is nearby and is a quaint little town with the Shaw Festival and antique and craft shops. There's lots to do in Niagara Falls and it also has a Casino now. Take the Maid of the Mist boat ride to the Falls. There's a cable car ride above the whirl pool. You can always go to Toronto where there's a million things to do! African Lion Safari is about 1 hour from Niagara Falls. You tour in your car or bus to see the animals in the wild. The monkeys are hilarious but they'll take parts of your car so take the bus if you value your car!
