Wishful thinking

Atlantic City -- my family used to go to the beach once a year for a week right outside AC before there was gambling, and when it didn't have bad areas. Haven't been back lately but, from what I've read here, and heard from friends, I don't want to go back.

Message: To wishful thinking
I lived at Montauk AFB, on the south fork from 1968 to 1972. Always wanted to go back, finally did in 1999. The AFB is closed and now our houses then are low income housing now. The hill I learned to skate on is a mere bump. But I spent an entire day on the rocks in front of the lighthouse remenising with my mom, who also was returning for the first time. Maybe we knew each other then?

Northern Californians will remember this one - The Nut Tree on I-80. I used to love their awesome toy store, the little train to the airport, rocking horses in front of the main store, honey cookies in all sorts of shapes. It closed, never to open again.

"The Nut Tree" ah memories. My grandparents told of stopping there when it was just a fruit stand with drinks in ice in galvanized tub!!!.
Also along 80 in same area was the "Milk Farm" Big black and white cow swinging back and forth overtop of building--greatest milkshakes of all time. It too has faded into roadside history.

Anyone from San Jose will remember "Frontier Village" an old West amusement park that was hokey good family fun.
Who could forget the shootout with the sherrif and the bad guy that happened three times a day.
The bad guy always got shot and the sherrif would pick a kid to help load the body into a wheelbarrow.
Man, that wouldn't happen today. Too violent I'm sure.

Cambria and San Simeon. Growing up, I spent about 15 summers in Cambria. My parents ran a summer camp. It is still there.
We would bus to San Simeon (Hearst still owned everything but Pete Sebastian's store). We had access to the beach with no tourists.
Cambria was a quiet little village. It has all changed to a tourist destination.
Too bad.
P.S. I went through Hearsts' Castle when the family still owned it.

Mercer County NJ where I spent some of my childhood. Back then (late 60's) it was pretty rural. Lots of farmland and acres and acres of forest. We picked wild strawberries and blackberries in a meadow. Now it's nothing but McMansions and identical housing developments as far as the eye can see... no farms left, no meadows, all gone. It depresses me so much I never go back.

Well, not from my childhood but from so early in my adulthood that it was almost 30 yrs. ago (yeah, I'm an Old Person): Nags Head, Duck and the OBX.
Thank god for the National Seashore, otherwise it would be nothing but cookie-cutter overblown palazzos from the Va. line to Myrtle Beach and beyond.
I remember Duck as a handful of older-style clapboard cottages -- REAL cottages with a couple of bedrooms, small kitchen, small living room all on one floor with a single bathroom -- and Winkie's (?) general store. North of there was almost nothin' up to the Va. line, except for the wild ponies, deer, etc. Now it's all these horrendous, cheek-by-jowl places larger than in any normal suburb, clusters of Christmas-store gewgaw shops, yupscale restorantees, and all the SUVs to go with them.
I remember thinking I wished I had a few bucks to buy a little land up near Corolla light. I'd have made a fortune if I resold it, but now I'm not sure I'd even like to have a place there anymore.

AHHH<
Manhattan Beach in Sheepheads Bay Brooklyn! 5 or 6 families (each family had about 4 or 5 kids)would do this every Saturday.
We would go in morning, coolers full. Fresh Fruit, salads, corn on the cob. BBQ all day. Burgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken, Steak for the grown ups. Swim and eat and sleep all day. Shower at the public shower and watch the fireworks at night. Stopped for an Italian Ice on the way home. Oh such fun and great memories!
