Winter weather in Big Sur
What's it like, temperature wise, and precipitation, typically during December, January and February? I would check weatherbase.com but I don't know what town to select. Thanks.

Where in Big Sur are you planning to stay?

Along the river, the trees and the mountains provide shelter from the wind, but it will be damp and chilly. Right at the coast, it is likely to be windy, so bring a good rainjacket with a hood.

I love the winter along the coast.

Ventana Inn, on the coast.
|
just keep in mind that if we have a bad winter storm (usually in january), pacific coast highway and get closed in sections.

Cold and wet. The pointer about Hwy 1 closing is a good one. If you venture up the coast stop and walk/hike around Pr. Lobos..it's easy hiking and the scenery is beautiful. Also if you make it to Monterey try the Fish House..it's a local place with huge helpings of fresh fish done a hundred ways and you can still ask for it the way you want if you don't see it offered.

I think that generally the highway closes further down the coast below the Big Sur River area. Unless there is a huge storm, the highway between Carmel and Big Sur stays open. How far down is the Ventana Inn?
|
Mark Twain said...I never felt a colder winter than summer in San Francisco...Big Sur can be sunny and pleasant in the autumn, winter is when the sun does shine thru. If you are going to the Ventana Inn, which is right near Nepenthe, don't worry, you won't ever need to leave your room!

First rain due in tonight. The amount of precip along the coast is misleading because even that small amount can lead to mudslides and road closures. I would tend to head toward Carmel and do the drive down hwy 1 on a nice clear day from there. It will take the whole day, but you'll have some peace of mind. If the weather's rotten you can still enjoy Carmel and maybe Pt. Lobos.

"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" is always attributed to Twain - but in fact he never said it or wrote it.
