Winter Texans
Called down to SPI today and the bridge is supposed to be finished mid-December. Anyone on this board going down for January and February?? We stay at Sunchase Beachfront on the Gulf side.

I'm a full-time Texan, and from what I have heard on the news, construction hasn't even started on the bridge yet because the TxDOT hasn't secured funding for it yet. Keep checking before you come down!

I moved from Houston 2 years ago and have not heard of the SPI. What is it? Thanks.

Straight out of today's Austin American Statesman newspaper: "Repairs to the collapsed bridge to South Padre Island are running ahead of schedule and could be finished before the state's Dec. 23 goal," the island's mayor says.<BR>Hope that helps.

The friends we talk to in Port Isabel say the bridge work is going great and is ahead of schedule. They say the tourists are coming back, and island business is picking up.

Dianna, good news. Just this past week they announced that the opening of the bridge will be next Wednesday, Nov. 21. I saw the pictures of the bridge last nite and they are putting up the guard rails and finishing the final pavement on it. Contractors earn an xtra $10,000 a day for every day they came in early. Marcia's post was right - scheduled date was Dec.23 so they earn a big bonus. Kudos to the State and the SPI people for getting this accomplished in such an expeditious manner. PS to poster Christi, please check your facts a little better before posting. Have a good trip to SPI, Dianna.

Thanks for the info Larry, I heard a couple days ago from another Winter Texan who gets e-mailed the Brownsville paper. Four weeks ahead of schedule, wow millions for the contractor. Heard it was all for the Clint Black concert to raise funds for the island next weekend. Glad I won't be the first over, lol.
