Winter sights with student price
 

We are international students in New Jersey trying to find a place to go during the winter break. We were considering NC, but not sure if the mountains are suitable for winter if we don't ski. We are open to date and location as long as it is a good place for winter, but it has to be ...
1. somewhere that public transportation is popular enough to take us around since technically, we can't rent a car.
2. a 4-9 days trip around $800- including the airfare from NJ.
3. In the east or central north part of the US, cause it's closer to NJ. No New York, Florida, or Niagara falls.

We have considered so many places but not sure where is better for winter. Just want some advice. Thanks.

Is that $800 per person, including air fare, hotel, food and activities?

If you aren't going to ski, what do you want to be able to do?

How many rooms will you need? How old are [you since many places won't rent to younger folks]?

How about Charleston, SC. You can take Amtrak there, and then you can easily get around the city. Most rural areas are just not going to be accessible to anyone without a car. And the climate is milder down there. North Carolina (Asheville in particular) is quite picturesque in the winter, but I don't know how easy it would be to get around without a car). I think you need a mid-sized city that has a lot to offer, so Charleston fits the bill. Washington DC would also be a good choice. There's lots to do there, and since many attractions are free, it's a good place for students on a budget (though hotels can be expensive there).

You can fit your budget by riding the Lake Shore Limited (Amtrak) to Chicago and staying at the HI Hostel. The upper floors of the hostel are used by college students as dorms.

There's a lot of great things to do in Philadelphia, and it's a very walkable city with good public transportation. You should be able to come by train or bus from NJ, and there's a lot to do that's free and great "street food" which is reasonably priced.
