If you don't mind the long drive (depending on where you'll be coming from), Lake placid will have it all. Good variety of lodgings and restaurants, cross-country and downhill skiing and some fun things like the Olympic bobsled run that you can tour (I think maybe you can even pay to take a ride down it?). It is a bit of a drive if you're coming from north Jersey or metro NYC area - in that case you may want to explore Catskills options. You could probably even find some quaint and fun places to stay in and around Woodstock NY. It has the feel of a small New England Village but a funky, artsy (and sometimes a bit touristy) feel to it. Not sure where there's CC skiing close to it but shouldn't be too far.

Mohonk Mountain House, in New Paltz New York, about 90 minutes from NYC. This is a beautiful old-fashioned lodge hotel on a small lake. 5-star facilities and amenities. They have all kinds of indoor and outdoor activities. Check out their website at Mohonk.com

I am also a big fan of Skytop Lodge in the Poconos just north of Stroudsbourg. Another fine old lodge hotel with great facilities and lots of activities, including their own small ski area and bobsled run. Their website is skytop.com.

I have my doubts about availability of these hotels or any other nice resort hotel for Martin Luther King weekend and this late date, but you can try.

I second the above poster's recommendation for Lake Placid. For accomodations right in the village (which I would recommend as the village is quite quaint and you can walk to everything) I would suggest in this order:

Mirro Lake Inn
Best Western Golden Arrow
Lake Placid Hilton

Of these 3, I highly recommend the Mirror Lake Inn ... It's the nicest place to stay in Lake Placid in the village.

The Lake Placid Lodge is stunning.
Dollar- wise can be comparable to the Mohonk M. House, which is also nice.

If you want something simpler/cozy, look into the Lake Pleasant/Speculator area of the Adirondacks. There is snowshoeing, X-country skiing and snowmobiling and a decent breakfast at the Speculator Inn!It's about a 4.5 hr drive from NYC

I too love Lake Placid. If you want the Adirondacks but don't want to schlep all the way to Placid, though, I can suggest the Copperfields Inn in North Creek, Warren County. It's pretty upscale and romantic with an excellent restaurant. Downhill skiing is less than 5 minutes away at Gore Mtn.; topnotch X-country is at Garnet Hill Lodge in North River, no more than 10 minutes away. And trust me on this: there's plenty of snow everywhere! Enjoy!

Keep an eye on the weather . . . some spots up north are getting 25" of snow this weekend and it won't melt very quickly! Even if you are not staying at those towns, you need to keep it in mind while traveling through them. Have a good time whereever you decide to go!

I second The Copperfield Inn in North Creek. I've eaten there, but never stayed there. It really is very nice, but a little epensive for us, but would be great for an anniversary. It is in a little town, so there is not skiing right out the door, but very close by and I believe they have a shuttle to Gore (which is a GREAT ski area).

In Speculator I'd recommend the Irondequoit Inn (which is actually in Piseco). It's not fancy - but very quant and clean. That would have cross country skiing, but not downhill. If you're in Speculator, you have to eat at Melody Lodge - it's wonderful. Melody can be over-run by snowmobilers. Actually, that can be a problem in a lot of the Adirondacks. You go and all you can smell is gas, exhaust, and cigarettes! And the noise! Yuk!!

if it's an anniversary splurge sort of weekend, look into the lake placid lodge...the sister property to the point (www.thepointresort.com). the point is probably the most luxurious small hotel in the states, with the lake placid lodge having the same atmosphere without the hefty price tag. really a special place, if you're looking for a bit of luxury. down a notch, as another poster mentioned, is the mirror lake inn, which i enjoyed as well - great spa.

Please plan carefully. We received 40" of snow this weekend. No, this is not a typo.
