Winter Garden & WTC site

Will be in NYC for a Sat/Sun in August. On Sat we would like to go to "ground zero" and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Did a search & read: Tickets or "permits" are no longer needed to visit Gound Zero. The best viewing of Ground Zero is across the street at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center. The best way to see the site is from the stairs that go from Ground Zero to the Wintergarden, which is across the street. They did an excellent job of restoring the Winter Garden to the way it used to be.

Is the Winter Garden open on Saturday?

Would prefer to take bus rather than subway -- any one know which bus would be best?

Any suggestions for lunch near the Tenement Museum (97 Orchard Street)?

Thank you.

Yes the Winter Garden is open on Saturday, although I don't know if many of the stores and restaurants inside will be.

I can't help you with a bus unless you tell us where you're coming from. Unless you're coming from somewhere downtown, the bus could be quite slow and isn't likely to have regular service to that part of the city. The subway would be easiest.

Follow the crowds and you cannot miss the World Trade Center site. Please do not refer to it as "Ground Zero" as that is a name the media gave to the site.

Hey, GoTravel, why on Earth would you tell someone what NOT to call the former WTC site? Do you have a lock on Political Correctness? And why are you telling MHS to follow the crowds there, when MHS wasn't asking WHERE it was? MHS, you can't get help on which bus to take unless you tell us WHERE you will be coming FROM. NY is a big place, see? Actually, some of the best viewing of the site is from the second floor of the Stage Deli which is across the street, on the NE corner of Church and I think Vesey. No crowds there, but you have to buy lunch, which is a good thing because you'll be supporting a local business -- most of the shops in the Winter Garden are chains anyway. When you go to the tenement museum, don't forget to go to another Deli, Katz's, which has GREAT knishes. You should also check out another lower east side institution, Kossar's Bialys. Here's what Time Out New York Says :

The former stamping grounds of Eddie Cantor, Irving Berlin and Meyer Lansky, the Lower East Side has recently experienced an influx of hipster inhabitants, but it still bears signs of its Eastern European Jewish heritage. To get a proper taste of the neighborhood, start your tour at its lowest reaches and stop by Kossar's Bialystoker Kuchen Bakery (367 Grand St between Essex and Norfolk Sts, 473-4810), where the underappreciated bialy (basically a Jewish English muffin) gets its day in the sun. You can pick up one of the plump, oniony breads, still warm from the oven, for a mere 45 cents, or go instead for a bagel that's as good as, if not better than, any in the city.

There's not much left of the old Lower East Side, but a few small, old-fashioned specialty-food shops continue to operate in this still-Jewish enclave. Stop by Guss's Pickles, a storefront on Essex that sells three varieties of pickles from enormous barrels, as well as pickled mushrooms and other mouth-puckering brined items. Just around the corner sits Kossar's Bialys, a 50-year-old bialy factory that sells wholesale and retail?you can actually watch the bakers work the dough as you wait to place your order. Head to the nearby Kadouri & Sons, a 30-year-old shop specializing in nuts, dried fruits, spices and Israeli groceries. Thankfully, there's more to see, but we'll leave the rest of the exploring to you.?Milena Damjanov

By the way, you may want to take a bus, but if you're coming from somewhere like mid-town, after you do, you'll wish you took the train. Bus and train maps are online at http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/ have a great stay.

MHS,
I was in NYC in March and visited Ground Zero without going to the Winter Garden (wasn't even aware of this). We just walked right up to the fence that surrouds the area and then walked around the area for a while (we rode the subway to the nearest open stop in that area--can't remember the station--sorry). We went there in the evening and there were very few people. There are huge lights all around the site, so you can see even in the dark. I'm sure you'd get different views being higher up, but it's still incredibly sad and moving, no matter how you see it.

The Cortlandt St stop on the N/R subway line stops right at the WTC site. (This stop used to have entrances directly from the subway level into the WTC mall.) There are viewing areas through the fence at street level within a block of the subway entrances.

Nope flopmiester, I don't have a lock on PC but if you go back and read my reply, I asked the original poster to "please not refer to it as 'Ground Zero'". Why do you ask? I find it offensive as does my family.

The answser to your bus question is: the M20 on Seventh Avenue.

I live downtown, however, and I've tried to take this bus. First of all, it doesn't run very often. Secondly, you often get stuck in Holland Tunnel traffic which can add as much as half and hour to your trip (and the Holland Tunnel area isn't the most scenic part of the trip).

So your best bet is to take the "E" train down to the "World Trade Center" stop and walk west, across West Street (which is actually a highway, although there are intersections with street lights so you can safely cross by foot).

However, for a more pleasant walk, take the "1" or "9" trains to "South Ferry". When you get out of the train, you'll be in Battery Park where you'll have great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. Walk north, following the river, to the Hudson River Park, which is a beautiful park in Battery Park City. The Winter Garden is, essentially, in the park about ten minutes walk from the Battery. When you get to the marina (which you can't miss), the Winter Garden will be the all glass structure on your right. It's not that tall compared to the buildings adjacent to it, so it's easy to find. Once inside, just walk up the marble steps to the viewing area.
