Winston-Salem: Please Help
 

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Winston-Salem NC. My fiancee and I are looking to possibly live there for several years. I think she might attend Wake and I will be getting a teaching job. Anything about the area small or large would be much appreciated THANKS!

Nice town/city. Use to be the biggest city in NC. A lot of corporate history there. (RJ Reynolds, Hanes, former Nabisco HQ, former Wachovia HQ). Part of the triad area of Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem.

Gateway to the mountains which are only a short drive. Has a certain feel/vibe about it that is liked. Actually has the bones of a fairly urban city which is not normal in todays southern growth of sprawl like a lot of southern cities.

Has a bit of everything. W-S has very educated people and being the gateway to the mountains, has some of that down-home feel---which is all good all the time. Has some of the best medical care in the country. If I were moving to the Triad, I would probably live in W-S. Put it this way, when you meet people who grew up or lived a while in W-S, they are usually "pretty cool people."

My wife & moved to W/S when I went to Wake Forest in 1986. We ended up loving the city so much we stayed for 15 years.

It's a great small city of about 150,000. Has four definite seasons, winters will see some ice & snow, but not overwhelming--hey it's only North Carolina after all. A surpising number of good restaurants (e.g., Noble's, Village Tavern, West End Cafe, South By Southwest), and a nice arts scene.

Lots of housing options. Of all the neighborhoods we lived in, we liked Ardmore the best.

I highly recommend W/S.

I lived there for about twenty five years and now live about thirty miles away. What would you like to know that SS and Chuck haven't covered?

My fiancee and I are coming from Ashland Ohio. However we are both from Springfield and Zanesville. So North Carolina will probably be warmer but not a whole lot warner. I was curious to how much snow in the winter? Also, I would like to know a bit about Wake. My girlfriend is interested in their Business Grad School. If anyone knows anything about the program or the school in general that would be great.

Also, wanting to get a teaching position in the area I was quite intriqued by Guilford County Schools. I was wondering how far Greensboro is from WS? And, does anyone know anything about Guilford County Schools. I am a Social Studies major and looking to teach 7-12 grades. THANKS!

Ronnie, WFU offers an outstanding graduate business program. It is widely respected. I think you and your girlfriend should come down for a visit and tour the school and community. Both Guilford and Forsyth school systems are excellent, but I personally feel Forsyth is the better of the two. You could live in Kernersville and have a short commute to WFU or Guilford. Come on down.

Thanks for the advice. How hard is it to get into the program. My fiancee is a 3.3 GPA student in Finance. Is there any apartment complexes or real estate places you would reccommend in the Kernersville area?

Everyone has covered WS very well and I don't have the first hand experience with the city--but have always admired it.
Wake Forest is an absolutely world class university--undergrad and graduate school. It would be hard to comment on her possibility of entrance, I think. What undergrad school.

Ronnie, WFU is a very competitive program and more than GPA counts in terms of admission. Your girlfriend should contact the admissions office to learn more about her chances of admission.

Since it's already the second half of July, wouldn't it be too late to start applying for a fall MBA admission, as well as a fall teaching job?

If, however, you're looking for the following year, then you have lots of time to do some thorough research.

Lots of interesting things here, methinks.

I work with several WF MBAs. Smart group with varied backgrounds. Entrants into MBA programs usually have work experience before they are accepted. A 3.3 is good, but WFU is a world class school. She would need to be talking now to them and preparing all that is need to get into the 2007/2008 school year. It is very competitive.
