Wine buying on Cape Cod
We'll be in Cape Cod next summer, and self catering. We have high standards in wine. We'll be staying in Brewster. can anyone recommend good places to buy good wine, please?
Nice wine store in downtown Chatham.
To avoid disappointment I suggest you consider bringing some with you.
My reccomendations: Epicure liquor store in nearby Chatham and/or Ring Brothers Market in Dennis. You might also enjoy a tour of Truro Vineyards.
Luke's on 6A in Brewster.
Thanks to all but Dukey. This place has the BEST information.
That was a bit harsh on Dukey as he also gave good advice. So maybe you wouldn't even consider bringing a single bottle with you but it doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
I don't see a problem with Dukey's post either.
Oh. Sheila's from the UK. "Home" is a long way away.
Yes, she is. It's pretty hard to put a case of wine in the trunk. Sheila posts a lot on the Europe board and has given great advice about Scotland for many years. What a pity she got this treatment from some people over here. Perhaps you might want to stop assuming that everyone here lives in the US. Even for those of us on the West Coast it would be tricky to take your own wine to Cape Cod.
Good grief.
I'll second Luke's in Brewster. There is another place that specializes in fine wines in the Skaket Corner mall in Orleans, just beyond the Brewster town line. Sorry I can't think of the name at the moment...but you can't miss it because it is the only liquor store in the mall.
Oops; a series of misunderstandings _ doncha just lurrrve the Internet? I thought he was having a pop at me because I claimed "high standards" in wine quaffing; and it never OCCURRED to me that he wouldn't realise that carrying wine from overseas was not really an option.
If I had realized you were coming from overseas I wouldn't have suggested bringing wine from home, Sheila.
I am sorry that I am one of those people who doesn't keep track of the whereabouts of everyone who posts. I was simply trying to be helpful. I'll attempt to keep up in the future |
While there take a trip to the wineries in R.I...great wine.
Sheia, As I hope a trip to Scotland, and the U.K. is in our near future, if I can be of help in your sojourn of the Outer Cape, don't hesitate to give a shout-maybe even a Cape GTG while your're here.
Dukey, even though you may never have heard of Sheila before now, a glance at her email address will show you where she comes from.
Good grief. Sheila is okay with things now. Dukey is okay with things now. Why stir things up? It is OBVIOUS that Dukey did not glance at Sheila's email address. Nor did I at first look.
BTW, Sheila, take a drive out to Provincetown during your trip. Don't know the particular stores, but I have found great luck buying wine in Ptown. |
Thank you all. I was TRYING to apologise Dukey, albeit in a slightly less than up front way:)
Capecodshanty, I posted a while ago looking for some input AND I did a huge search, and collated a bunch of information -not including stuff about wine shops. There's so much posted about Cape Cod that I only went back about a year. If you'd be good enough to come to email, I could maybe let you have alook at what I've put together and get some input from you? It's nearly all from here or other boards, so I don't want to bore people by re-posting it. |

Dukey, even though you may never have heard of Sheila before now, a glance at her email address will show you where she comes from. >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>> As far as I am concerned, it doesn't matter whether she is coming from Timbuktu or from neighboring Rhode Island! There is nothing wrong with the response to suggest that she may carry her own wine from wherevever she's coming from. I know a lot of serious oenophiles who do that. I've lugged a few of my cellared bottles on trips to South East Asia as I don't find the wines avaiable in high-end restaurants and stores that I'm directed to to be within my standards. |
Back on topic....you've received some good suggestions. The Cape has plenty of fine liquor and wine stores, with knowledgeable staff. They also have some bigger stores with not much service, but big selection. You should not have any problem.
If you go find yourself in Hyannis, or are looking for something particular, check out. http://www.the-wine-list.com |
there is a great wine store (package store/liquor store) in Orleans on 6A just before the rotary (round about). Just past the merge with route 28 there will be a windmill on your right. The store is on your left past the lobster pot. Good wines.
Please remember that the california and oregon wines are a much better deal than other "new world" or French wines. The Nauset Beach Club in Orleans (on Beach Road on the way to Nauset Beach) has a very strong wine list and great Italian foods. Book in a reservation when you arrive on the cape. Worth a visit! IBy the way, in Massachusetts the liquor stores are called "package stores." If you're flying out of Heathrow, preorder a bottle or four from Berry Brothers to pick up at the airport and carry on! in Massachusetts the liquor stores are called "package stores." >>>>>> as long as we are translating for sheila, let's get it right: in Massachusetts the OFF-LICENCES are called PACKIES :) don't worry, it's not rude in massachusetts. |
Yellowbyrd's suggestion in Orleans is Orleans Wine and Spirit at Skaket Corners and the other Orleans suggestion is Windmill Liquors. And Luke's is fine too.
Sheila, I have read many of your helpful Scotland posts (dreaming of taking the kids there in a year or two)--thank you. My family is from Dundee and Scotland is very near and dear to my heart. We own a home in Brewster so I'd be happy to help with any questions, arrangements--although CapeCodShanty is an excellent help to all on this board. My email is [email protected]. |
I know you said you were self catering, but if you have one night to eat out try the Red Pheasant in Dennis on 6A, they have great food and wine!
Thank you both, molly and ccrosner. I will definitely be in touch
