windy in Wailea, Maui?
 

We're planning a trip to Maui next July. We've never been there. Friends recommend a condo in the Wailea area, but my husband says he's heard it gets windy there. The friends have only been in the winter and they say it's fine. How about the summer? Is it windy there then? Also, how does Wailea compare to the Kahana area, which is where my husband thinks he wants to stay? Thanks.

Kahana is on the windward side of the island. Wailea has far better beaches and accommodations, with cooling afternoon breezes.

Maybe your friends are thinking of Ma'alaea Bay Beach, where the winds can seriously bother, you starting by mid-morning, to the point that I wouldn't stay in that area. The Wailea beaches are breezier by the afternoon, but it's a cooling, pleasant breeze which I like! Wailea is the most upscale area of the island, along with Kapalua, and while the Kahana area is very, very nice, I don't think you can compare them. Wailea is my favorite part of the island, and it's right next door to Kihei where you can find everything at more reasonable prices!:-) Happy planning.....

I second everything bonniebroad said. Wailea is wonderful and won't disappoint.

We were in Wailea for a week and I honestly don't remember one windy day!

Last January, we stayed in both the Wailea and Kahana areas. Wailea is warmer, dryer with a pleasant breeze. Kahana/Kaanapali area is much windier and the temperatures are more temperate with less humidity. My husband and I agreed that we liked the Kahana area much better because of the temperatures and great breeze. Wailea is definitely more upscale. If your husband dislikes wind, you need to stay in the southern area of Wailea (the further north you go along the coast, the windier it becomes).

your thinking of the trade winds, waliea is the LEAST suspectable to them, and in the summer they are not much of a factor anyway. the tradwinds hit the north and west side of the island and they are strongest in the wintet
