Wilmington to Savannah
 

Have 7 days travelling down the coastline from Wilmington to Savannah, where would you suggest to stay that is reasonably quiet,scenic and with good restaurants. What is weather like mid-October?

This is not a great distance--about 6 hours total driving. I would spend a day or two in Wilmington, drive south and see Georgetown on your way to Charleston. Stay in Charleston 3 days and then go to Savannah for 2 days.<BR>If you want a beach experience try Pawley's Island. For excellent food near Pawley's (25 miles north of Georgetown, 1 1/2 hours north of Charleston) eat at one of the MANY restaurants in Murrell's Inlet (just north of Pawley's).

Gretchen: Thanks for your reply, sounds good. Can we still expect reasonably good weather mid-October - no hurricanes I hope!! Anything would be warmer than London!

The weather in October is absolutely spectacular--the nicest month on the coast we think. We will hope for no hurricanes of course.

Paula, just had a cousin & wife from England do the same trip, the only suggestion I would also make would be to fit a night in Beaufort S.C. My wife & I joined them there and stayed at the Cuthbert house, web site www.cuthberthouse.com. Wonderful Civil War Era house occupied by the Union during Civil War. Great inn keepers. We had the Victoria room for $145/night well worth the price. Everything else Gretchen has is well worth seeing.

Wander around Southport...great lunch at the Fish tales restaurant overlooking the Marina.

Paula,<BR><BR>as usual, Gretchen has given you great advice. I also agree with Russh about Beaufort. I would add Southport NC to your list too. Southport is a small port city near the mouth of the Cape Fear--it is small, quaint, and has several antique & art shops. We enjoyed lunch at the Provision Co. (rustic, casual, good food, overlooking the water). Southport is about an hours south of Wilmington.<BR><BR>Perhaps best of all is the route from Wilmington to Southport. Take 421 through Carolina Beach and Kure Beach to Fort Fisher (civil war site) and then take the car ferry to Southport. See www.ncferry.org for schedule and fares.<BR><BR>Also, the implied message you got above about skipping Myrtle Beach etc. is probably good advice, as you are looking for *quiet and scenic.* However, on your way to Georgetown on Highway 17, be sure to visit Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park/Atalaya.<BR><BR>Have a great time!
