Wilmington DE questions

Hi

This is a very last minute overnight in Wilmington, so that we can view the British PreRaphealites at the Delaware Art Museum. We are stopping over on our way to Long Beach Island NJ.

I used Hotwire and got a good deal at the Westin Wilmington on the riverfront. The address is 818 Shipyard Drive, Wilmington, DE, 19801. We'll only spend the night but will want to eat dinner on Thursday night.

Can anyone recommend a restaurant not far from there? We aren't interested in upscale or fine dining, and since we don't drink, wine listed is irrelevant.

Will it be fairly easy to park at the Delaware Art Museum?

Thanks.

Why don't you use google's map function and look for restaurants?

This isn't hard, especially because you're not posing requirements that would be hard to meet (non-upscale, non-fancy, extensive wine list unnecessary).

Ultimately, Wilmington as a city is a pit with a few oases of decent areas surrounded by dumpiness. It is one of the two notoriously awful satellites of Philadelphia (Camden NJ is the other). Just find something in or near the hotel.

Yes.

I'm not sure what day you'll be actually visiting the museum, but note that admission is free from 4pm to 8pm on Thursdays.

Hi tuscanlifeedit,

I had a few hours in Wilmington waiting for a train in recent years and enjoyed my chowder at Harry's Seafood Grill.

Cheers, Daniel

La Fia is relaxed and casual, and very good. According to google, it's 1.2 miles from your hotel. Street parking.

Chef Bryan Sikora has an impressive background: l'Ange bleu and Django in Philadelphia, Talulah's Table in Kenneth Square, and others in SE Pennsylvania and other parts of the country.

Thank you very much. I know nothing about Wilmington and these responses are helpful.

Of course I looked at Google maps and scoped restaurants.

I'm happy to have personal recommendations.

^^That's a correction, not a suggestion!

I made these restaurant recommendations a few years ago for NeoPatrick.

Deep Blue (seafood restaurant) has changed to a steakhouse. Haven’t eaten there since it was converted but it has 3.5* on Yelp.

Taking a moment to thank everyone and report on our brief trip to Wilmington.

The Westin at the Riverfront in Wilmington was a very nice hotel that we got on a blind offer from Hotwire. I was hoping for the downtown area, but after a long drive from Pittsburgh, this area was great. Very easy to find and very easy to park.

We were tired when it was time to eat so we just went to Harry's Seafood, about 3 minutes from the hotel. My husband's oysters and fish were very good, and my shrimp cocktail and filet were awful.

The next morning we went to the lovely Cafe de la Couer which I had found on tripadvisor.com, searching for resatuarants near the Delaware Art Museum. The weather was perfect and we ate outside in the pleasant Trolley Square neighborhood, but off the main drag. It was delicious and fun.

The Delaware Museum of Art was great, in a wonderful setting of parks and mansions.

We absolutely liked Wilmington. Thanks all for your help.

Hi tuscanlifeedit,

Sorry my recommendation of Harry's was a bust for you (if not your husband) but glad you otherwise had a nice stay! I've had 2 pleasant forays myself into Wilmington over the years.

Best wishes, Daniel

I lived in Wilmington for 4 years and really enjoyed the city. There are quite a few restaurants I especially miss, and Harry's Seafood Grill is high on that list. It is not far from where you will be, either.
