Williamsburg Vacation

My wife and I are planning a trip in October to the Williamsburg area. Need help in deciding where to stay, number of days to stay, places to eat and things to see and do.

You'll be getting lots of different opinions. We go twice a year, prefer to stay for 3 nites on-site in the Woodlands or historic houses and rarely touch our car.You can find reasonable prices in Oct. via CW Internet specials or the Expedia/Orbitz's.We roam the W&M College spots for breakfast. For dinner, the Taverns have become too pricey for us so we now frequent The Williamsburg Lodge.Every restaurant chain is located nearby & generally run above (chain) average quality. We walk till we drop-the CW Visitor Center is great-they will fill your day.Enjoy

For a great cheap meal, eat where the locals and truck drivers, Pierce's Pit Barbecue. Not a fancy place by any stretch of the imagination, but the food's great.

We stayed at the Kingmill Resort a couple of years ago and loved it. We had a very nice one bedroom unit with a full kitchen and washer and dryer. The resort has indoor and outdoor pools, marina, tennis courts, golf, restaurants, etc. The only complaint we had with Williamsburg was that we were there in the middle of July and it was BRUTALLY HOT & HUMID!!! October should be perfect.

In spite of the heat, we enjoyed Williamsburg and the Kingsmill Resort!

Have fun!

We stayed at Kingsmill last week. Cannot recommend it highly enough. All the rooms have been recently renovated. It was perfect. I posted a more indepth description under a trip report for DC and Williamsburg. A search should locate for you.

Don't search, just click on Bennie's name and you see all posted.

I go to WBG several times a year for long weekends -- mostly for CW (Colonial Williamsburg). I don't stay in places as luxurious as Kingsmill, the CW hotels/houses, nor Hospitality House. I actually enjoy old "motor courts" and often stay at the Governor Spottswood, but I also have stayed in a number of the chain hotels too.

I'm very intense on listening to what the CW interpreters are saying, and ask questions. I try to take in a lot. But I've usually at overload after 2 or 3 days, and then head over to Virginia Beach for a day or two. Like "antmaril", I also made a mistake of going down once in July; NEVER again!

I've posted plenty about the area too (click on my name) and I'm certain you'll find a LOT if you do a search. Glad to answer questions!

October will be a lovely time to visit Wmsbg. I think you can find plenty to keep you busy during even a week-long stay. Richmond and Norfolk are an hour away and very easy day trips. Let us know your interests and types of restaurants you enjoy. Every hotel chain is represented here and any will be close to everything. You can stay in one of the older motor courts as Rb suggested or something more luxurious such as the Williamsburg Inn or Kingsmill.

We just moved to Williamsburg and I can only give my first-hand experience with eating. If you have a night to have a nice dinner, I would suggest the Fat Canary. It's a bit trendy, but remember that you are in Williamsburg so it's not NYC, and the food is creative and nice. We've also eaten at A Carroll's and did not think it quite as good - it was also very pricey. Good luck and have fun!!
