Williamsburg, VA question

I wanted to know if anything is open on New Years Day in Williamburg, specifically with regards to the colonial attractions. Also, if anyone has a good recommendation for a hotel that can suit a family of 5, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depending on your exact requirements, you might like the Embassy Suites in Williamsburg -- two beds in the bedroom, plus a pullout sofabed. Small pool, big breakfast.

Colonial Williamsburg is open for business as usual on New Years Day.

Hi Tim! We just returned from a weekend (posted my trip report a couple day ago) at the Woodlands Hotel and Suites in Williamsburg and it was very nice. Although we have no kids, this is a great place to stay w/kids and a very convenient location for visiting the historic area (you can either walk to it or take the shuttle at the Visitor Center which is located next to the hotel). We had a king suite w/a queen sofa in a separate living area (door separates the areas for added privacy). There was a TV in each living space (one for you and one for your kids!), also a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker and sink. The bathroom was large. You probably will need a cot but they also offer 2 double beds accommodations. Included in the cost (we paid $145/night which is the cheapest rate for a "Colonial" hotel) is a continental breakfast, bagels, toast, muffins, cereals, yogurts, fruit (great for kids). Also, if you are planning to spend a few days in the area, may I suggest that you spend the first day just walking around the historic area (get a feel for the place) and if you are interested in visiting the "inside" of any of the buildings, then buy your passes the next day. I would think passes for a family of 5 will be very expensive, so make sure you really want to spend the money on the passes (I've heard that "kids" often find the historic area rather "boring" and unfortunately Busch Gardens will be closed). It is free to walk around the historic area and you can visit the shops, the church, and a few other buildings w/o a pass. Hope this helps. Have a lovely time!

Winter is REALLY off-season in Williamsburg. Other than the weekend, I'm sure you could find brand-name hotels on By-pass Road (very near CW) for $30-40 for a standard room - see if you can get adjoining. It's nice to be at one of the CW properties, but they are not inexpensive. I'd rather have 2 rooms (and bathrooms!) anyway. I like the Best Inn (Bypass Rd) - indoor pool, breakfast buffet, or Super8 Richmond Rd & Lafayette (not a typical one, an older hotel with larger rooms) but I especially like an older motor court, the Governor Spottswood on Richmond Rd - locally owned, very friendly. (there is no X in my REAL eddress)

You are probably bringing the kids for the educational value so get the passes. There are a lot of programs directed towards children. They are all marked in the weekly program. Good choices are the capitol and the magazine. Make sure you find out when the fife and drum corps is performing. If your children are young, they might be interested in renting colonial costumes to wear for the day. Kids also enjoy taking the carriage rides. The Gaol (jail) is also interesting. I can give other family activities if you are interested. All hotels are available here. We like Residence Inns. The one on Richmond Rd. is new. Have fun!

I would like to recommend the Kingsmill Resort. We were there for a week at the end of June and enjoyed it very much. We had a one bedroom condo with a full kitchen, living room - it was really quite lovely. The Kingsmill is a four-star resort and I highly recommend it.
