Williamsburg stopover w/teens
We're traveling to the Outer Banks from Indiana next week (6/9)and have stopover reservations at a hotel near the Richmond airport. Our crew includes 2 adults and 5 teens (ages 14-19). Assuming we can get to our hotel by 8-ish, I'm considering driving over to Williamsburg for the evening. I wish we could get there in time for the ghost tours but I doubt we can. Is it still worth driving 40 miles when all of the attractions will be closed? I'll add that last summer we got into DC and headed out of our hotel at 10 for a self guided walking tour of the monuments. We had a blast.
What about restaurants at that late hour? Or at least dessert and coffee?
Or should we stay in Richmond -- and what could we do there that might have an educational w/o being boring bent?
BTW, I'm feeding five teens and providing surfboards for the week. Whatever we do has got to be reasonable budget-wise.
Thanks.

Williamsburg is about 45 minutes from the Richmond airport and an hour from downtown. Realistically you wouldn't get to town before nine which, quite frankly, is just about the time they start rolling up the colonial sidewalks. Most restaurants serve until 10. Busch Gardens closes at 6 during the week until mid June.
If you really wanted to hit Williamsburg, why not book a place there and go directly from the airport. That would give you time to take a quick walk up Duke of Gloucester Street and have a late dinner at one of the local pizza places (Sal's is great and not pricey). That will put you 45 minutes closer to OBX the next morning. If you're renting a house at the beach, most don't have check in until 3 pm or later. You could spend time in Wmburg in the morning as well.
Sorry, can't help you with Richmond info. Have a great time at the beach!

obxgirl,
I'd love to book a place in Williamsburg. Unfortunately, williamsburg didn't even enter my mind two months ago when I pricelined the hotel. If it was just one room I was blowing off then I'd still consider it but we've already boaught and paid for three rooms. Hindsight. Our cottage is actually booked Sat-Sat but my son is graduating from high school Sunday evening so we can't get there until Tuesday AM. Again, since we're already paying for the beach, I probably won't stick around in the morning to do the colonial thing. We'll catch it on another trip I guess. Thanks for your help anyway.
PS - I'll open another thread for it, but do you have any clue re teen activities on the outer banks, especially near Avon? I'd love the help.

It's too bad your lodging is all paid for -- there is a bit to do in Richmond - the "hot" area is close to the Capitol builings, the exact name excapes me, but something "Shuckroe". I agree with obxgirl that you'd arrive about the time things are closing down. But, the streets of Colonial Williamsburg *ARE* public streets, so you could drive down and roam around if you desired. The better restaurants would be closed, but you could probably still get a bite to eat at Ruby Tuesdays or Pizzaria Uno -- or some other national chain restaurant/bar.
OBXGIRL: Stopped Friday 5/30 at Sals by Victor for my usual "Chicken Victor" & asked for Della, my usual waitress. But I've got a NEW place I'll be stopping at in Wburg too- I think the name was "La Casita" -- across the street from Applebees. Good food and much better prices than Chilis. Mexican food so authentic you'll be afraid to drink the water! <g>. I've not yet checked the Mexican food at the Ho-Jo on Bypass, but I have gone to the one on Second St.
