Williamsburg hotels - help us choose
 

Can anyone recommend hotels in the Williamsburg area

We are going for a 3nt stay in July and since we have never been to the area it is hard to choose one
We are a family of 4 and planning on visiting all the regular tourist spots in the area

Our budget is to stay $300 or less per night

I like the Woodlands, it's new, big rooms with either 2 queens or a suite with a king and pullout queen (with 2 TV's, a bonus with kids) a refrigerator, sink and microwave, a pool, mini-golf and it's right next to the historical area and an easy walk.

The rates also include breakfast, which was pretty good for a continental, cereal, bagels, fruit, pastries, coffee, juice, etc.

I think it's the best bet for a family.

Try the Williamsburg Lodge - lovely rooms and closer to the restored area than the Woodlands.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Kingsmill Resort. Beautiful grounds with golf, pools, tennis, biking, etc. We had a one bedroom condo with a full kitchen. It was lovely.

Hmmm, the Woodlands is across the street from the restored area, newer, bigger rooms and less expensive than the Williamsburg lodge. Also I don't know if the lodge includes breakfast like the Woodlands does, which is a significant savings and convenience for a family of four.

I know where the Lodge is and it's closer, but really, how much effort is it to walk a few hundred more feet???????

My family has stayed at the Woodlands, Williambsurg lodge and the Williamsburg Inn, and Providence Hall and of the three you probably would enjoy the Lodge. It is just a few steps from the historic area, where the Woodlands is a lenthy walking distance. Most people catch the shuttle from the Woodlands or visitors center. The Lodge has just completed a terrific renovation, and their website will indicate whether or not your hotel/ticket will offer breakfast and what type of breakfast - continental or a full breakfast. The Inn is more formal and if you have children, Providence Hall might be a good choice, too. A little more expensive, but the rooms were large. My personal favorite is the Lodge.
This is a great year to visit with the Jamestown Anniversary. I believe Colonial Williamsburg offers shuttle service to Jamestown and Yorktown and I would certainly take advantage of that. There is so much to do in Colonial Williamsburg, regardless of your choice of hotel. My family vacations there often and we always find something new.

Governors' Inn is the least convenient, but lowest priced of the "official" Colonial Williamsburg hotels.

Because you have 2 kids in your party, who probably prefer chain restaurants and fast food over more "refined" places, you might prefer a hotel "off-site". Most of the chain hotels on ByPass Road and Richmond Rd can be had in your price range. You'll find a lot more dining options close (even walking distance) to your hotel, as well as shopping, miniture golf, etc. Williamsburg is a compact town so it will take you no longer than 10 min to get to the CW visitor center. There are newer Hilton & Marriott properties, as well as places like Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, and LOTS of Comfort / Quality / Holiday type hotels.

If you'll be doing Busch Gardens or the water park, you might prefer something east of Williamsburg, or up on Capital Landing Rd. or Kings Mill, as has been suggested.

The CW properties are very nice, but I think more suitable for couples. Just my opinion. Enjoy your trip. I visit CW often and never tire of it.

Without a doubt, the Williamsburg Lodge is your best bet within your stated budget.

Rooms in the Tazewell wing are large and have a sleeper sofa that would handle two children.

Another vote for The Woodlands.

Another option may be to see what the rental cost of a timeshare unit is. There are many in the area. We traded a timeshare at the Historic Powhatan Resort about 10 minutes from the Historic District. It was just off the bypass road. And very nice. They also rent the units. The cost for a week at the resort may be comparable to 3 nights at a hotel. You would have more space and the luxury of a full kitchen. Also you would be near all the chain restaurants and a grocery. If I remember correctly, they pretty much roll up the sidewalks in the evening in the historical district. This place had a pool and playground.

Powhatan Resort looks very nice but its off Ironbound not Bypass. There is another timeshare off of Bypass.

BTW this thread is ancient but a lot of the info still applies.

As long as this old thread had been brought to life, I'll chime in with none of the above. On the streets of the historic area itself there are several small inns whose rooms blend colonial decor with modern convenience. No pool, no gym, but if you are going to Williamsburg to experience the historic ambiance, there are no better places to stay IMO. If you go to the Williamsburg site, there will be links to these inns.
