Williamsburg & Gettysburg suggestions ?

My wife and I will be travelling back from North Carolina to Boston and will spend Sept. 13 & 14 in Williamsburg and 15 & 16 in Gettysburg. We are interested in the Historic Sites and hotels nearby at around $100 or so a night. I've been to the WEB sites but am looking for your experience .Any suggestions welcome. Thank you very much.

We just returned from Williamsburg a couple of weeks ago. We found Colonial Wills. to be a little disappointing--too commercialized for us. However, we did enjoy touring some of the plantations and the winery. Also, went to a mystery dinner theatre called "Capt. George's"--it was great fun.

There are a number of B&B's in Gettysburg that look attractive (at least from the outside). If you are interested primarily in hotels or motels, I would suggest that you look on the north end of town, near Gettysburg College. You will be situated away from the tourist area, and it's only 4 blocks to the center of town. While you're there, be sure to stop by the Gettysburg Brewing Company and Pub for a pint (on York St.) The old train station in town is the center for information about tourist activities. Have a great visit!

Jake, I know this sounds tacky, but don't miss the "Electric Map" at Gettysburg. It provides a wonderful overview of the events that took place there. Afterwords, rent the auto-tape tour and drive the area. Also, Eisenhower's home is located there and is a part of the National Park Service holdings. Might be worth a couple of hours...was a worthwhile venture for my family.

Jake,
If you're interested in historic sites, consider Annapolis, Maryland rather than Gettysburg which is a significant detour from your path from the Carolina's to Massachusetts. Annapolis teems in history - home to four signers of the Declaration of Independence, all of whose homes exist; hotels where colonial patriots stayed still cater to guests. A restaurant, the Middleton Tavern opened in 1757; during the days leading to the Constitutional Convention, politicians would meet every Thursday evening to discuss events at the tavern; the tradition remains unbroken to this day. Unlike the Rockefeller reproductions at Williamsburg, the Georgian homes and buildings in Annapolis are authentic (there is more unembellished Georgian architecture in Annapolis than in London)! The area abounds in B&Bs, has a website with tourist information and in addition has the U.S. Naval Academy, one of America's most impressive campuses.

If your travels take you through New Jersey, especially along Route 80, stop off in the Skylands Region at Waterloo Village in Stanhope. There are some excellent places to stay nearby, like the Inn at Millrace Pond, and shopping at Olde Lafayette Village. There are more Revolutionary War battlegrounds in New Jersey than any other state.... take some time to investigate the living history farms, and Gen Washington's encampment areas in Morris, Somerset, and Mercer counties. Check www.njskylands.com for more information.
