Williamsburg Accommodations

Has anyone stayed at Colonial Houses in Williamsburg? What was your experience? Is Willamsburg swamped with tour buses and crowds during mid-April weekends? Are williamsburg attractions more geared for kids or adults or both? Is CW a tourist trap?

Thank you,

The colonial houses are awesome!!!!!So fun, try to get on on DOG street (Duke of Gloucester) as cars aren't allowed so you won't hear any traffic. You can use all the amenities of the Inn and they even provide ice delivery and room service. April is a lovely time to go with the flowers, although it may be crowded with school vacation. Programs will be enjoyed by both adults and children. Really it's fabulous and staying at the colonial houses makes it even more enjoyable. They are all VERY different though, so you should make your request known ie, queen or full bed, canopy, floor, etc. Some have your own private garden...

Our spring break is next week. (Richmond VA) area. Most of the people I talk to have last week, this week, next week or the following week off for school vacations. So, that brings you to about April 8 for vacations. After that, you should have less and less children.
Colonial Willamsburg is a great place to visit. The weather in April is perfect. You will have warm days and cool nights. The summers get very hot and humid and crowded!! I don't believe it is just a tourist trap. There is a lot of great history that happened there. They do a nice job of reinacting it. It will be crowded almost any time of year there, but not as bad as in the summer.

CW is tremendous. Stay on-sight and the touristy stuff won't be an issue. Please be aware that it gets very hot in mid summer. The restored houses are modern rooms inside of a historic shell - really impressive.Check out their $55 per nite, per person rates that include admission. The newer building at the Woodlands is by the Visitor Center & is very nice.

The Colonial Houses are great! I just returned home (boo-hoo) from spending a week in Colonial Williamsburg and had a fantastic time--again! We didn't stay in the houses this trip, but the Williamsburg Inn. As turtlegirl stated, when you stay in the Colonial Houses you can use all the amenities of the Inn. The bathrooms are a little dated but the experience is still worth it. April is a good time with the weather turning a little warmer. School field trips are still going on but you won't have to fight the summer crowds or the heat and humidity. With the Colonial Houses, like the Williamsburg Inn and Providence Hall Wings and the Williamsburg Lodge (which is closed for renovations currently) you are merely steps away from the Historic area. There are so many things happening that your whole family will enjoy. Hear Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and many of the local characters as they tell you about their life in the 1700's, tour the gardens, make bricks and enjoy a great cup of coffee at the newly re-opened Shields Tavern. A dinner at one of the Taverns is must, too. Tour William and Mary College which is just across the street and shop till you drop. I don't know anyone who has visited Colonial Williamsburg and not come away in awe of the effort that is put forth. It is truly an experience! Enjoy!
