williamsburg
does anyone have suggestions on the taking an excursion on one of the schooners or taking a ghost tour in the williamsburg area? is kayaking still a possibility in Oct? Thanks for the help.

It was in the 90's this weekend. Kayaking is a definite possibility. I can't comment on the other activities.

Do you happen to know good places to kayak that rent the kayaks onsite? Thanks for your help.

Look at this:
http://tinyurl.com/2ddm4b and this: http://tinyurl.com/2f9m89 http://tinyurl.com/yuxvpa At York River you'll be kayaking on a creek through marshland, gorgeous but you will have to take into account the tide schedule. At Chickahominy you'll be kayaking on rivers and at Little Creek you will be kayaking on a reservoir. Kingsmill rents out kayaks to their guests if you happen to stay there. |
One truly amazing schooner trip is the "Yorktown Days" overnight trip (October 17-18) next week on the Schooner Virginia. This is a replica of an early-1900's wooden pilot schooner. She's big--beautiful--comfortable--and fun. Check out http://www.schoonervirginia.org/Guest%20Crew.php, or call 757-627-7400. The trip might be sold out but there may be someone who cancels.
Too bad you're not here now--Virginia leaves Baltimore today for the two-day, Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, finishing in Virginia Beach/Norfolk. Enjoy, Valerie |
thank you for the great info and web addresses; this is very helpful.

my family took a 2 hour cruise on a large multi sailed boat, that later included dinner at a yorktown restaurant.
unfortunately i can't remember the name, but the restaurant is the first one you approach on the water and is quite large and well known. this combination was a real good deal. |
Birdie,
Of the three places you suggested for kayaking, which would you condsider to be the most scenic? |
Sorry that it took so long to respond.
I just read this am that Little Creek is closed because of low water levels. I think the decision between the other two will be based on what you like. York River SP will be through marshlands surrounded by tree-covered hills. You could combine your kayaking with some hiking. I like the Taskinas Creek trail. Chickahominy is located where the Chick. meets the mighty James River. This is the area where "New World" was filmed. It is a very pretty area. You can go up the Chick. or along the James and look at the very expensive houses. You are likely to see bald eagles both places so keep a watch out. I saw two circling around Kingsmill yesterday!! |
