Williams, Arizona.

It looks like my wife will drag me here soon, we will drive from the SF area.
Any info on making it a nice trip would be appreciated.
TY.

Adjust your attitude? :)

Are you going to the Canyon, or just to Williams?

Stayed in Williams for the night and took the Grand Canyon Railroad to the canyon. It was nice. I love Arizona!

Thank you lenny, you are so right.

We will visit The Grand Canyon also.

We would like to take the train, and then what?

Right after you cross into Arizona on I40, take the Topock exit and enjoy some of the Old Historic Route 66 though Oatman, CA to Kingman, AZ. In Kingman, AZ there is a good Route 66 museum. If you are really into Route 66 make sure you take the Seligman exit and go find Elvis! :)

How long will you be in Williams? It's a long drive to the Grand Canyon so you might suggest to your wife to stay in the park or at least Tusayan to be closer. The Grand Canyon is an awsome place and just walking along the rim is fun. There are shuttle buses to take you to different overlooks where cars can't go. You can do a combination of walking and riding the shuttles back.

If you are going to be in the area for several days you might find the drive from Grand Canyon village to Desert View exit and on to Cameron very scenic. You will get sweeping views of the Painted Desert Area. Head south on Hwy 89 and then take the Hwy 395 loop road to Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater and head down to Flagstaff and make a circle back to your lodging.

Will you be traveling to other areas? If you have time on the way home, leave the Grand Canyon and head north to Page, AZ and see Lake Powell, then stay on Hwy 89 to Mt. Carmel Junction and drive though Zion National Park, then over to I-15 and head down to Vegas!

Don't miss the nightly cowboy shootout! Very fun, my family loved it. It moves from corner to corner every night in Williams.

Thank you.

If you have a choice, I would trade the time in Williams and on the train ride for more time at the Grand Canyon. It is an amazing place with countless opportunities to explore the south rim by shuttle bus, hiking, etc. The historic buildings are also very interesting and there are many ranger programs. Sunsets and sunrises over the canyon are spectacular, so it is best to stay at GC village if possible

Here's the link to the Grand Canyon Railway http://www.thetrain.com/

They have some nice package deals that include lodging in Williams and at the Canyon. My husband also didn't want to go to the Grand Canyon, but after I dragged him there, he loved it! :)

We spent our time exploring the rim, doing a light hike into the canyon, and watching sunset. If you're not interested in hiking, there are buses that can take you to the scenic points on the rim.
