Will there definitely be snow on the ground in December?

Hi guys, An Aussie doing a trip to the USA... thought I had our agenda all sorted but a family member who lives in the USA is moving to Minneapolis before we arrive in December. Probably spending about 4-5 days here. Is it a given that there will be snow on the ground?

Thanks!

Likely but not guaranteed. We spent Christmas, 2004, in Minneapolis awaiting the birth of our granddaughter. No snow at all but lakes all frozen over and temperatures around 0 F. Windy. Vikings played Green Bay in a US football match. Shirtless men painted green or blue (?) in the parking lot celebrating before the game. Mad crazy.

No guarantee. The last several winters have been weird, so there's no telling what will happen. It will be cold but that's the only thing you can count on.

Weather is unpredictable, it is difficult to say that snowfall occur or not.But hope for great time with snow this year.

We generally have White Christmases but the last couple of years have been weird. This past year, two of our worst snowstorms occurred in April and May!! It will be cold and the lakes should be frozen. What snow related activities are you looking to do? The ski resorts near the city should be open and making snow if none exists naturally so that can be done. Hollidazzle will be happening which makes for a fun night.

I hope you're still getting to San Diego though... It'll be warmer there.

I remember getting a dusting of snow on Nov.1, other years had a brown winter.

Thanks guys. Not planning any particular snow activities, but I live in a very hot part of the world so some snow would be nice to see and for my little boy to experience.
Will keep my fingers crossed!

And yes J62, still get to spend some time in sunny San Diego! Will start and end our stay there (probably Thanksgiving and Christmas!!!).

A couple of hours north of Minneapolis is Brainerd. The lakes Brainerd area is spectacular, especially with snow and its a rare December there without snow.

No guarantee of snow, but it will almost certainly be very cold. Pack a coat.

Hope your family member enjoys Minneapolis. I think it is a great town. If they can get past the winters, which can be brutal, it really is a great place to live.

There are some small ski hills in/near the metro. They will definitely have snow in December if nothing else. If you go north, I would head to Duluth and beyond along the shore of Lake Superior.

The weather this week has been as low as 30f (-1c). Sometimes its sunny and sometimes its gray and windy. Its only October. After living here for 40 years, my guess is for a colder than average winter with early snow.

When "travelgourmet" says, pack a coat......we mean a real coat! If you don't have something stuffed with down, be sure to bring lots of layers, a warm hat (something that covers your ears), gloves, a woolen scarf and warm, flat boots. The sidewalks get icy. Its easy to slip and fall. Broken wrists are the number one injury during Minnesota winters.

The good news....its really pretty here after a big snow fall.
Enjoy!

cks, there is a 90% chance of measureable snow on the ground. If you want to ski or snowboard there is a 100% chance of doing that activity as the resorts will make the snow. If you arrive and can not stand the cold please ask someone to direct you to a sporting goods store and buy some under garments for the cold. Its the secret to enjoying living here.
