Will My Allergies Act Up In Savannah? St. Augustine?
 

Will a person with asthma and sinus have problems in Savannah in February? How about St. Augustine?

Ummm, do you stay home ALL the time? Do you have control measures for every day living.

Have you been tested and do you know what you are actually allergic to? Do you know what will be blooming when you are there? Amazingly, there will be things blooming there unlike here in New England.

By March, it would be a dead certainty for me. I am allergic to tree pollens. I gave a series of lectures one March, beginning in Savannah, continuing in Chapel Hill, and ending in Virginia, and I had a screaming sinus headache the entire time. Now I start my meds a couple of weeks before going that far south.

In Feb? I don't think so.

Hi TD - it all depends on what triggers your allergies. Triggers like dust mites and molds can be anywhere. Plant pollen allergies can vary geographically. Have you been tested? I just went through a screening test for 43 substances and it wasn't bad at all.

Hey basingstoke2: "ideopathic" is the word allergist has been using. I'm not allergic to shellfish but the contrast die dropped me like a stone. I never really know what's going to be a problem.

Frankly I liked starrs' response the best! In general, do folks with allergy problems flock to Florida or avoid it?

People with mold allergies go to Arizona.

Otherwise, it depends. When we spent winters in Florida, I took generic Claritin daily. The generic worked better than the brand name at about a third the price.

Hi again TD - you probably know that idiopathic simply means the allergist hasn't the foggiest. It just is. That said, no worry about maple but the dust mites and mold will be there. You may have had previous contact with some of the indigenous plants before so you may have been sensitized. Have a great time.

February should not be a problem. Pesky pollinators will be dormant and molds won't be much of an issue. This winter and spring are predicted to be dry.

In Feb. ? There is nothing growing/blooming in Feb.

There are many things blooming today in Savannah! It's beautiful. Redbuds, dogwoods, daffodils, tulips, camellias, etc.

According to the local source, there's no problem with pollen/allergies today -

I had some sort of attack in Austin on Thanksgiving Day and never fully recovered. Wheezed and huffed my way through the above places plus Pt. St. Lucie FL. Went to doc upon return and am back on prednesone (which is a miracle drug for me).

I encountered low pressure systems in every place on my visits-don't know if that has an effect or not.

To answer your question, I didn't do as well as I'd hoped but still got around. 2 TR's in the USA section.

There's nothing that bad around here. We get a lot of pine pollen in the spring and SOME reactions to other spring pollens...but nothing like cedar fever!

starrs, I hope not! I have a couple of cedars in my yard. Although, they came up about the same time I started having problems. hmmmm.
