We are a couple who will be in Savannah for five days the first week in October. We will be driving down from Ohio. We are interested in art, museums, historical buildings and light houses but open to any thing the area has to offer.

We would appreciate any suggestions on things to do, see and eat while there.
We will be staying in the historic district.

Ride out to Tybee Island one day. Very pretty and nice ride.

Watch the movie Midnight in the Garden of good and evil and then go see the Mercer house and Bonaventure cemetery.
There are so many good places to eat. We hang out at Molly MacPhearson's pub but down on the river there are some rooftop bars that are nice. The Bohemian is one.

Hi lateinlifetraveler,

I recommend a visit to the Owens-Thomas House. When I went, a $20 pass included a visit to the Owens-Thomas House, Telfair Museum and Jepson Center for the Arts. I enjoyed visiting all. The Isaiah Davenport House also gave a well-presented glimpse into 19th century Savannah life.

The bouillabaisse at Boar's Head was fantastic (along River Street) and my meal at Belfort's in the City Market (shrimp & grits with collard greens as side) excellent.

If you head out to Tybee Island, a stop at Fort Pulaski gives an interesting glimpse of Civil War history (plus, there are lovely views from there of the Savannah River as it greets the ocean).

Walking around the squares of the Historic District (including Forsyth Park) with all the Spanish Moss has a certain decadent semitropical magic that's quite something to see first-hand.

I hope you appreciate Savannah as much as I did! Daniel

All good recommendations. Use the hop on/hop off trolley to get around and hear a bit about the city's history. To eat where the locals eat, try the Crystal Beer Parlor.

What to avoid: The paddle-wheel boat tour of the river. The harbor and its environs really aren't interesting and don't make for picturesque viewing.

Schedule a walk with Dirk of Savannah Rambles as your introduction to the city. He will explain the city plan, history, and architecture as you enjoy a lovely walk through the historic area of the city.

The Savannah History Museum has a good bit of Civil War history, as well as some Revolutionary War stuff, as I recall.

Very nice walkable city. Whole new appreciation of Johnny Mercer...being older his music was already familiar to me. As you can see we enjoyed a day at a cooking school along with dining here and there. Recommend Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House for a traditional homestyle Southern feast.
