Wild Horse
Hi there!
I am taking a trip to the Grand Canyon this March with my parents. My dad really wants to see wild horses running around and I want to know what route going back to Vegas would we catch this sight? I have seen some sites talk about Reno and Virginia Range, but we don't want to drive 7 hours to get there from Vegas. What routes would be the best to see this? Thanks! |
Not where you are going to be.

janisj have you driven this route? What sights did you see? Just desert? Is there an alternative route where it's more prone to having wildlife? I have seen that site already, I am trying to see if there's alternatives.
Thanks! |
We saw tons of them in the Canyonlands in Utah, but that's in the wrong direction for you.
To be fair, they weren't doing any running, either. The damn things were standing in the road and wouldn't get out of the way. |
We've seen loose horses in Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. There are open range areas in some places. This fall we were in the Weatherill Mesa area of Mesa Verde and one stood on the path we were on for a while.
It has always been hit or miss and almost never when we were trying to see them. |
Thanks emalloy! I am sure that's how it's going to be. We do have two days we will just drive around Arizona and Nevada, just trying to figure out the best direction so we won't be too far from Vegas since our flight to San Fran will be out of there.
Would driving from the Grand Canyon down to Salt River by Phoenix be worth it? |
We live above Reno in the Virginia Range and have herds of horses coming by our house, sometimes as many as 40-50 but recently about 10. But, one cannot count on them coming by.

About 30 miles north of Reno, the BLM has captured 100++ wild horses. They roam in a huge corral.
Each is available for adoption. Vaga |
The places where they are can be seen most often are not near where you will be driving.
