WiFi Hot Spot near Sheraton NY Hotel and Tower

Planning a trip to NY this summer and DS needs to "keep an eye" on the computer systems at the University (his office) back home. The Sheraton charges for internet and he would prefer something free (saving the taxpayers some $$).
Would appreciate it someone would give us suggestions of free WIFi locations near The Sheraton NY Hotel & Towers--811 7th Ave.
Thanks in Advance

Try finding a wi-fi network from the room and if there isn't a good signal then tell him to head to a Starbucks. There is one I think right across the street on 6th Ave.

Sorry, that link doesn't work. Here are three free WiFi spots near the Sheraton:

Applebee's
205 W 50th St

Hooters
211 W 56th St

McDonald's
1651 Broadway

Thanks for the suggestions. bspielman--it's interesting that the web-site link indicates the Sheraton has free WiFi but the hotel room info. states there's a charge ($14.95 a day).
Perhaps it's free in the hotel public areas.
One can hope.

If wi-fi is free at a big hotel, it is usually only in the public areas. So that is nit unusual at all. There is also free wi-fi in Bryant Park behind the public library.

By the way, Wi-Fi is NOT free at Starbucks unless you have a Starbucks card or AT&T service (either DSL or cell).

Doug, are you sure about AT&T cell service resulting in free WiFi at Starbucks? (long story because we used to have DSL and don't anymore, but we do have AT&T cell service). As for the Starbucks card, true, but you just have to keep $5.00 on it, you don't even have to use it.

Yes, I'm sure about the AT&T connection at Starbucks. I often use my iphone there for free.

Do you have to do anything special to log on, or can you just click on the Starbucks WiFi network and it just "knows" you're an AT&T customer?

I get a log-in screen, but to be honest, I don't remember. Once I set the thing up the first time, it worked from then on. It may very well be that iphones are automatically recognized and that other phone users have to jump through more hoops.
