Wicked Question
 

We are going to Chicago in four days, with tickets to see Wicked. I had asked on this board earlier if my 8 year old would be ok seeing the show. I am getting worried now because my sister is reading the Wicked book and says there are a LOT of sexual discussions in the text. Is the show like that? Please make me feel ok about buying tickets for our whole family.

No, the show bears only a mild resemblence to the book. The raciest line in the musical is just before the curtain falls, as a kiss is exchanged, and the heroine says "for the first time in my life, I feel....wicked." I wouldn't hesitate to bring an 8-yr-old, as long as they enjoy music (and terrific special effects).

Sylvia is right--the book and show are very different. I did not read the book until after I'd seen the musical, and I'm glad I did it that way. If I'd read the book first, I would not have wanted to see the show (I really didn't enjoy the book very much). The show has a serious theme running through it but is much more light-hearted than the book, and I don't recall anything overtly sexual.

Don't worry, Ashley, its a fantastic show, and for the whole family. Can be a tad frightening for real little ones, but not for an 8 year old.

It's a great show. As a mom of an 8 year old, I can tell you your child will be fine. He/she sees much worse on your average tv commercial.

My granddaughters, 11 and 6, absolutely loved this show! They already practically knew the score, as their mom plays it in the car.
I saw it myself, and it was truly marvelous - with a very subtle lesson about people who are "different".

Ashley, how did your 8 year old like the show? I'm dying to see wicked and would like to take my 8 year old daughter. My 5 year old son might be too young, what do you think?

Both of my dds, 8 and 11, enjoyed the show. It was not scary and had great music. There are a lot of questions that were answered from the first movie that I don't think she "caught" but it didn't take away from her enjoyment of the show. We bought the soundtrack before we saw the show and that enhanced our enjoyment. I would say it would depend on your child's attention span. If he can sit in front of a tv show or movie for a couple of hours, then he should be fine for the play. Enjoy!
