why just florida

looking at the latest tracking of ivan,it shows it heading wnw heading right toward the florida alabama line. Why all you hear on the news is whats going to happen to poor florida, when it looks as if ala, miss, louisiana, will be just as affected.www.noaa.com

Jocelyn_P Sep 11th, 2004 02:04 PM

Ummmm....because the state has already been smashed to smitherines?

Patrick Sep 11th, 2004 02:18 PM

Well, Phillyfly, maybe that's because until 5 PM today, there had not been a single isolated reference or suggestion of a possibility that Ivan was headed possibly west of Florida? Do you think that could be why??? Had you heard of Ivan or seen the projections before that time?
Now our concerns are for those in the other Gulf areas that are likely to be affected as much or possibly even more than Florida!

SusanCS Sep 11th, 2004 02:42 PM

Look again, Phillyfly. Under the most recent projected track, the eye of Ivan is currently headed toward the Florida panhandle, NOT the other states you mention.

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 03:29 PM

Philly, honey, if you are feeling left out, or sorry for someone else who is left out, we would be happy to send the next storm your way. I am all for sharing !

jaye Sep 11th, 2004 04:06 PM

Phillyfly,
I have to say that I do think that you are on to something. Part of it is that national media always tend to give more attention to the more populous states. How much more do we hear about CA, NY, FL than other states??

In regard to the this board, you will find much more activity related to some more common vacation destination points than those that aren't as popular.

Patrick Sep 11th, 2004 04:24 PM

Look, folks I was trying to be polite the first time, but let's face it. Until today anybody who spoke a concern about Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana because of Ivan would have been labeled a lunatic. Not unlike somebody talking about the Mississippi flood affecting Seattle! It just plain wasn't headed there (and maybe still isn't) so why in the world would any sane person have expressed a concern for places that weren't threatened by it at all? Got it now???

What kind of incredibly stupid jealousy would cause a person to raise a concern because people were talking about the only state being threatened by such a major disaster??

Patrick Sep 11th, 2004 04:31 PM

And Jaye, duh! You are absolutely right. It must be a conspiracy! You know they hardly ever talk about the danger of earthquakes in Rhode Island. Nor do you hear about the terrorist attacks at the twin towers in Peoria. Must be because they are only concerned with the more populous states. Yep. That's it!

There's no accounting for stupidity is there? How much more do we hear about the more populous states? I wonder if it could be because there are so many more people affected there and because so much more happens there? Is that remotely possible? Duh!

Now, I've probably given the rudest post here ever, but seriously, when my home and life are being threatened by one of the worst storms in modern history, can you blame me for being upset when subjected to such insane posts as those above?

And Jaye forgive me if you were giving your post tongue in cheek, which it easily could be and should be. I'm just a little jumpy tonight and took your post as just possibly being serious, but I hope not!

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 04:35 PM

PHILLY says...".Why all you hear on the news is whats going to happen to poor florida,..."

How about saying Thanks or being just plain Grateful that they are NOT talking about wherever it is that YOU live.
When I read about the wild fires in California or Colorado, I have never thought, gee, why don't they ever include a NY or Fl ?

Patrick Sep 11th, 2004 04:49 PM

Must be some deep psychological problem, Scarlett. This happens to be the same poster who recently started two threads about how everyone moving to Florida ends up moving back and about how now that the hurricanes have happened what it will do to people moving out. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but seems to suggest some deep anxiety about Florida.

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 04:52 PM

Reuters."Florida is still cleaning up from hurricanes Charley, which killed more than 20 people and caused insured damage of $7.4 billion, and Frances, which killed 23 and caused damages of $2 billion to $4 billion. "

Well, Patrick, Philly and Jay are welcome to share ...
Would that be the same anxiety that Freud spoke of in his books on Insecurities regarding Florida and ones self worth?

SusanCS Sep 11th, 2004 05:55 PM

jaye - I assume (and hope) you're joking.

mcnh63 Sep 11th, 2004 06:18 PM

Wow some of these posts are a little harsh.
I really didn't see any harm in what the op stated. It sounded like they were just wondering and putting it out there. I didn't take it that they were looking for trouble just wondering why other states had not been talked about.
Hopefully all will be safe.
