So safety you are policing your own post. Now we have rules on how and when to answer. How nice.

Why do we need to make the "ocean safer" when, in relation to shark attacks, the ocean is not dangerous in the first place??? Stop hyperventilating for a second and think about what you're saying -- 79 shark attacks worldwide. Not 79 in Florida, not 79 in North America, 79 WORLDWIDE. Think about how much of the earth is covered with water. Think about how many beaches there are in the world. Think about Florida and California and the hundreds of miles of beaches in those 2 states alone. 79 IS NOTHING!
Infinitesimal!

Once again, if you're so terribly concerned..."derogatory comment" coming...U-S-E T-H-E P-O-O-L.

I am interested in what people have to say regarding this topic. Whether it be, "that this would never work because...", which several people have posted or "I agree with you because…".

Everyone has a right to post whatever they like. In my original post, I put “what are your opinions”. But I would like to have an intelligent discussion about this. If someone does not have any value-added comments then all its doing is wasting everyone’s time who might be interested in this.

I’m not wanting to discuss this with only people who agree with me. I encourage criticism. But state why you feel that way. Don’t just say “stay in the pool”.

This should be the case across Fodor's. Many people ask for advice only to be ridiculed or get posts that are not related to their subject. And that wastes people's time who might be interested in that topic.

Actually I think Safety has been pretty level-headed during this discussion. I (and others) were very critical of his suggestion early on in the thread, and he kept his or her cool, challenged our points. From there we began a brief foray of other possible ways to minimize the risk of shark attacks. Unfortunately that line of inquiry died on the vine (possibly because there simply aren't many ways to minimize the risk).

Safety appears to be trying to get this thread back on track--how to minimize the risk. If anyone has any ideas, let's hear them. I believe that's all Safety is trying to say, as opposed to trying to act as censor.

Safety-It is impossible to make our ocean's safer. There are hundreds upon hundreds of marine life out there that are risky to humans, ie jellyfish, stingrays etc. And believe it or not, sharks have their place in the natural order of things and to destroy them would wreck even more havoc on the enviroment. I agree with the above posters, one needs to be careful swimming in the ocean, avoid swimming at dawn and dusk, avoid schools of fish which attract sharks. Other than that, we cannot control Mother Nature. To try and do so would destroy the natural order and the eco-system. Man is not infallible, we are at the mercy of mother nature.

As to your comments above--this is a free forum and people have the right to say whatever they wish even if you are tired of it or don't like it.

Safety-This is not a DEBATE board! If you want to keep debating this tired subject move it to a debate board somewhere else.

Thank you Mr/Ms XXX. There are lots of people who are posting travel questions we need to pay attention now! There's a guy loking for a romantic weekend in SF, someone who needs a last night dinner in Maui, another needing restaurant recommendation in LV and someone going to SD in Sept and many more. Let's get going!!!!

Noyoumaynot, I said "I THINK I speak for MOST people", not "I DO speak for ALL people". I will not refrain from using that statement because I believe it to be true. Arrogant maybe, but still true. As for obnoxious, You are the one doing the name calling. I obviously don't speak for you and quite frankly I never said that I did. I'm quite sure that our opinions on many things would differ, especially given the rude tone of your post. I'm glad I'm not on the same wavelength as you!

People People People: Get out there and live your lives, every minute of every day. Go to new places, see new things. Read, amass knowledge. Help others. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Don't worry about being eaten by a shark.

Over and out...

Curious,

There was no name calling. I said, using that phrase made you sound obnoxious. Not that same as calling you obnoxious. And of course you believe you speak for most because as previously said, though it makes you sound arrogant, now you've admitted that you are. It's ok with me that we're not on the same wavelength and that's no insult to me.

aaahhhhhh...nothing like a little shut eye.

you know, i got to thinkin' that in any given year i'll bet there's many many more children (and adults) found dead in the bottom of swimming pools than are attacked by sharks. shouldn't then we be more concerned about installing fences around backyard swimming pools and keeping our children safe at home instead of worrying needlessly about a highly improbable shark attack?

Wow "awake" what a great point! Thanks for making it! Talk about perspective. The drownings in our part of the country start as soon as the temp reaches 80. There are also many many drownings in the rivers where people don't realize how swift the current is.

I am a fair skinned Irish lass, and what with all the cases of skin cancer and wrinkled leathery skin, I can't figure out why resorts don't erect gigantic domes over their grounds that will block out the damaging rays of the sun so that I can enjoy my vacation without worrying about these treacheries. And while they're at it, they could pump pure fresh oxygen into the dome to protect me from the nasty air pollution that is plaguing our country. Does anyone know why they don't?
