I'm sorry. Your next two paragraphs gave me an entirely different impression.

"When you can get the BEST rate from someone like Dollar, but have to pay an extra $100 or so for a rental to allow a spouse to drive I DO consider that fee being waived a great perk!"

...-- but for those of us wanting to save money -- what difference does that make if they're charging more for the rental to begin with? "

I am offering the information that many rental companies offer free additional drivers to family members, same-sex partners and co-workers. You may have to join their free loyalty program to access those benefits, but not always. I also learned in the process that Hertz has changed their policy to a wide-open, "every one in the car can be a driver" policy.

I wasn't addressing the comparative rates of any rental company to another. Just additional "additional driver" information.

What I was sharing had nothing to do with your post, other than your "second driver" comment reminded me of personal experience with additional driver policies.

Try using rentalcars.com They have big search base and can come up with some good deals.

Also, if you find the best refundable deal you can, early on - try using autoslash.com They will monitor your dates and time and alert you to lower rates. I am trying this for the first time for next month. Best rate was COSTCO but still crazy high.

OK, Whatever.

I wasn't the least bit "offended" by anything you said. I'm sorry if you were offended by anything I said. I get the feeling you are being overly defensive for absolutely no reason that I can imagine.

Yes, you added more information about additional drivers. So did I. What's the issue here?

I agree with the first comment (several years ago) that kayak is a great search engine for locating rates with different companies.

In addition, if there's a need for additional drivers, check each company's policies. Some do not require an extra fee for additional drivers if they are family member, same-sex partners or roommates residing at the same address, or coworkers. One may need to join the frequent rental program to waive the additional driver fee but that is a free program.

Your automobile insurance may cover rental cars so check that before you rent. Decline insurance at the rental counter if that's the case.

Be aware of which gas option your choose. I always chose to return the car with a full tank because it was cheaper than using their gas.

Be very careful to return the car on time. When booking, I booked for a return an hour earlier than the hour I picked up. So if it's a 2pm pickup, I booked a 1pm return on the return day. If you go over your rental agreement time allowances, the additional charges can be significant. A few extra hours can cost as much as an additional day rental. If your plans change, call the 800 # on the rental agreement to modify the agreement - if that's possible. Sometimes changes are not allowed. Just turning in a car at a different time/date than listed on the agreement can result in extremely high charges. I've turned in a rental car and rented a new one when business plans changed and modifications were not allowed.

I found the above helpful. The same may not be true for all.

LOL, I'll pretend there wasn't some hidden meaning in that last sentence.

Time for some to go listen to the "theme song" from Frozen, I guess.

Not offended in the least.
Just very tired of the usual.

Pardon. I should have used the "YMMV". It seemed too pun-ish.
