Who sells the best PIE in the Deep South

Where ever you end up, make sure the pie is baked on site. A lot of restaurants will sell you a slice of pie brought in from a food service vendor. Those pies are not worth the calories, and you could get the same at the grocery store.

And Spiro: Forgot all about Custard pie. Yum Yum. We had a couple of acres in the burbs and raised chickens and had a milk cow who also produced a nice steer every year - and my mom made the best custard also. Geesh - forgot how great homemade pies were.
As for ye Auzzies: As more or less suggested above - I would check the local papers or google to find an athentic pie shop/restaurant - or even a church type social where you wouuld get the real thing.
Don't fall for those "store bought" pies.

BTW - as one on the Left Coast - but who has been through the South a bit (Ft. Benning for 3 weeks of jump school and we hitchiked to Panama City Fla and also over to Atlanta, and then 3 weeks in Shreveport, LA - and also drove from our friends' place in Culman/Northeren 'Bama to Auburn, etc) - I ain't never heard about no Chess pie?

Thanks everyone. Sounds like we will have to join Weight Watchers before and after our holiday!
We are more interested in sweet pies like banana cream pie, pecan pie, etc. Australia's not really known for sweet pies, so we thought this would be a good chance to experience a little bit of the US culture.
Sorry BIGRUSS that you thought my question was ridiculous - I was just interested in people's opinions that either live locally OR who have travelled to the states that I mentioned and had some actual places they had been to that they would recommend. I do understand how big the area is that we are travelling to in the Deep South. Hence the reason we thought it would be good to follow some of the recommendations of fellow travellers and give our travel plans a fun, treasure hunt kind of feel. In the hope that we might discover towns and places that we wouldn't have known about otherwise.
Anyway, if anyone else has eaten some great pie in any of the States I mentioned, then I would love to know where.

Even fruit pies are usually have a very healthy dose of sugar.
If Banana Cream is what you want then go to Emeril's.
The main factor at any place would be that the pie is made on sight and that day. You want handmade/homemade pies. You don't want them machine made or premade.
I would definately eat at The Loveless Cafe near Nashville.
You are in Prime Pie Country, so have fun

The way you described Mississippi Mud Cake is not the way I know it at all. It is more of a cake like brownie with marshmallow or marshmallow cream and may or may not include a chocolate icing.
Red Velvet Cake and Bread Pudding are huge in the south too.
A lot of places put nut in their cream cheese icing on the Red Velvet. In my opinion, this is not a true Red Velvet(perhaps I'm wrong-probably just what I like).
I think the best bread pudding is the Bread Pudding Souffle at Commander's Palace. And if all of this isn't enough, Banana's Foster is also a staple-the original is at Brennan's.

One more thing, some pies are served warm and you can order it A La Mode (with ice cream).
Finally, sometimes a raisin or minced meat pie(occasionally apple too) has an optional slice of cheese on it. I don't understand that at all, but my dad likes it that way and occasionally has it that way.

I think it is a GREAT question. You just want to travel around and try local pies. I agree the best way is to ask a local and be sure the pie is locally made.
I'm from the south and and know all about southern pies but I may start doing the same when I travel the south.
