Great, Scarlett! How soon will you be receiving guests? LOL. It usually took us weeks to settle on a house. You HAVE to be a great decision-maker.

Ex berry pickers, (EBP's?) it turns out, according to a recent book, that your parents were ahead of their time. The book advocates the theory that today's children are desperately in need of exposure to nature -- even if it is working outdoors -- to stimulate the brain with something other than video stuff. The indoor life, replete with countless hours staring at a monitor (mmmm, wonder if Fodor's qualifies...) supposedly contributes to attention deficit disorder, etc.

For some reason, I cannot remember the name of the book....

Now, where was I?

Jim

Picking the beans wasn't too bad..at least there was some shade and we had a bucket to sit on. We could pick the huge "woody" ones that no one would eat because they made baby food out of them. The worst thing was the mud in the early morning..we got there right after they had irrigated so the ground between the rows was all mud. Then of course the outhouses...oh my word..YUK and there was never T-paper and always a wasps nest up in one of the corners. Oh yea...kids today have NO idea what they are missing!!!!!! LOL And they say the migrant workers are taking jobs from Americans? I can't even imagine suggesting such a job to my neice..the "Princess". Well, it's good to know that my brain is better because of crawling around the bean and strawberrie patches..ya think?

This is TOO funny! Jim F and all, guess what we are all doing Saturday?

Blueberry picking near my house in Michigan. We do cherries as well. And the kids too. But they do love it, as it is only one day or at the most two with a two week spread in between. But this year my grandson Andy is playing in AllStar Little League (IL) so he will be missing, as will his father.

Yes, and we do apples & peaches too, but not every season. It is a very good lesson about food in general and what it takes for it to "appear".

And they are just as at home as when they are at State/Madison.

Good luck, Scarlett, in your new abode!

Hey, Scarlett, after your email last night, and looking for restaurants, we booked Red Star Tavern for our first night based partly on an older rave of yours here. It wasn't until after I booked that I realized in is right IN the Fifth Avenue Suites. Guess we can walk THAT far!
Thinking Typhoon, Mama's or Mama Mia's the other night.

Scarlett, congratulations! We too found our new home very quickly in Victoria BC.
Not much berry picking going on here yet, but the blackberries are ripening everywhere. Unfortunately we will miss them this year because we have to go back to Toronto for a couple of months. But just wait until next year. There won't be a berry left unpicked. We think it's funny that they grow like weeds here - which they actually are in these parts- but in Toronto you pay 5 or 6 bucks for half a pint.

Scarlett, first of all congrats on finding a place to live already!!! Did you get one of my fantasy condos/lofts in the Pearl?

crefloors and mms.....Oh my goodness, I really thought I was one of the only kids that had to pick berries when I was younger. My mom started me out picking strawberries the summer of 3rd grade (our neighbor was the berry bus driver - oh, gee, how convenient!). I think we picked in the Estacada and Sandy areas. I must say I hated my summers when I was in grade school all because of having to pick berries. I remember starting out at 9 cents a pound and by my 6th grade year it was up to 12 cents a pound. To this day I still hate the song "Strawberry Fields Forever" (no offense). I'm so glad to hear I wasn't the only kid who had to do this - maybe it's an "Oregon" thing. Although I hated it, I must say that experience in my childhood certainly makes me appreciate a lot more things as an adult. Thanks for the memories!

Cheers,
Tracey

Scarlett - welcome to Portland. it will be so fun to live in the Pearl. wish I could afford it (although I don't think my dog would like it much).

Hey, I was a Salem berry picker as a child, too. And beans. And I worked in the cannery during high school and college (Truitt Bros.).

I am in hysterics laughing at all this berry stuff!

Wonder if we could round up a berry bus and send all our kids out? They can do that while we do a PDX GTG. Or maybe our GTG needs to be in a berry field, lol!

So...when we arrive in Portland on the 24th, what berries/fruit will be ready? And, most importantly, will there be little Oregon children out picking them for us??

What do they say about forgetting the bad things of the past as one ages? I'd forgotten about those outhouses, crefloors. Thanks(?) for recalling those memories!

Cucumbers were my favorite. The plants were low to the ground so you had all that bending over to do, but the buckets filled up fast, so you at least felt like you were getting somewhere. With berries of any sort, it took so depressingly long to fill the first flat that I usually gave up for the rest of the day.

My 13 year-old daughter knows enough to tell me it's against Oregon labor laws for her to pick berries, Jim. In some ways, I think we're our own worst enemies!

JimF--Marionberries!!! Absolutely the best!

crefloors--LOL!!!!!!!!

Beachbum--Somehow I think my kids would echo your daughter. We used to put not so ripe berries on the bottom and then put the pretty ones on top jsut to fill those things faster. Course we got caught on that too! At least when I graded pears that was easier. As far as a cannery job, it was pretty cushy.

Lawsy, all the little ole berry pickers here !! LOL

I had to help pick strawberries in my grandfathers garden and since then have refused to be a picker..so I am joining crefloors Princess

Patrick, not a bad walk at all!
Mothers and Mama Mia are fun..have lunch at Paragon or Typhoon or the Vietnamese place Pho Van..

We had 10 days to find a place so we were open minded about where and what sort of apt. We were getting worried on the 3rd day that nothing had been right for us..a lot of apts have dog size limits...then the Yankee said, we will know when we see it if it is Right.
Well, the next day we walked into this building and saw the apt and that was it.
We have wrap around windows so the views are wonderful and a huge terrace.
beachbum, we are near Whole Foods
We have met so many nice and friendly people already and Pup will really like Doggie Day Care if we have to leave him somewhere for the day..lol.
We are just enjoying being here for the rest of the week..amazing sunny warm weather..good movies, good food..
thornphoenix, it might just be one of your fantasy apts because it definitely was one of mine!
14' high ceilings and walls of windows ..thanks for all the good wishes, I am happy to be a newbie Portlander..so is the Yankee ~

Oh wow, that apartment sounds fabulous!!! Can you post pictures? Like you and the Yankee and Pup all together the first night in your new digs. You know, I know I'm a city girl at heart...I LOVE being in a city, so I'm green with envy!!!! So glad it went smoothly for you. Oh, and being so close to Whole Foods..we don't have one in Reno and I go there when I hit Sonoma County to visit my brother. So when is the move? THAT I DON'T envy you..LOL

Scarlett, it is great to hear that you and the Yankee are happy in your new home town! I found a photo tour of the Pearl at about.com and it looks wonderful.

Oh, yea! Scarlett. I did not even read this yet, I was thinking of you all week because I haven't "seen" you all week. I was just hoping that you were busy moving and did not "leave". Okay, I'll read the posts now.

Just wanted you to know that you were missed. Sounds like you and the Yankee are doing okay. Hope Pup is well too.

The west coast is nice, and a big area, offering privavcy. This will probably be short-term anyway.

I to belong to the berry pickers brotherhood or sisterhood. Many a summer I spent picking berrys and beans to earn those dreamed about clothes in seventeen magazines back to school issue. Anyone remember it? I grew up in Longview Washington and took the much hated berry bus to St. Helens Oregon to pick. Of course that ment really getting up at the crack of dawn. My mother use to state if you didn't make more money than it cost to pack your lunch you had a lot of explaining to do. I now live in the apple capital of the world or so they say. I just can't seem to break away from the fruit industry.

I love the Pearl district in Portland. My sister bought a condo over in the Sellwood district 6 months ago and the prices are skyrocketing and already she has made a very good investment.Have you been to the shops on NW 23rd yet? My sister was in Good Sam hospital for a long stay and I did a lot of wandering in that district. I am sure you find Portland a wonderful place to live. I will be doing some power shopping this weekend there myself. I live in eastern Washington but go see my much loved sister as much as possible.
