You can find freshly made bagels in shops in just about every neighborhood in New York City - that's all five boroughs. And everyone has their favorites. Some rounder, more doughy, variety, hot, cooled off... you name it, someone either loves them or goes down the block to another bakery.

Personally, I don't like H&H whether from the West Side or the East Side. Ess-A-Bagel, are okay, but not great. Eli's (of Zabar's fame) make their own... not a favorite or mine. Their's a small shop near where I live - Bob's Bagels, which are great.

I never travel anywhere without first picking up at least a dozen, usually two dozen bagels and, don't forget, the bialys. They've traveled through the US, to the UK and even to Africa.

Regardless, after the first 24-hours they all taste the same, and freezing doesn't do any good. I find they're just perfect to eat as they go from warm to cool. There was even a deli in Las Vegas that imported water from NYC to make their bagels... and they did taste like NY bagels, but after 24-hours, it made no difference.

Sandypaws3, you've got lots of choices.
