I always used to joke every new girlie girl heard the same first magical sentence, "Hey, ya wanna be on TV?"

Don't get me started on the Travel Channel! I cannot stand Get Packing, the World Poker tour, and all of the "secrets" shows that make me feel like I'm living below the poverty line because I can't afford to visit Little Palm Island or live on the ResidenSea. Oh, and let's not forget top ten best bathrooms or top ten McDonald's (although I'm embarassed to admit that I've been to #1).

Ian, where have you gone? Do you think we could all email Lonely Planet and have them find him and start those wonderful shows up again? They must be years old by now.

He is on a show called "Ian Wright Live". Can we get it in the States? Don't know. But here is the website:

I, too am sick of the poker. Acutally, the Food Network seems to pinpoint travel more lately than the travel channel. I have watched several very good shows that incorporate food and travel, which is ok by me.

Speaking of the connection between food and travel. Molto Mario on the Food Net, has great stories and info on Italy. After watching his show I feel like I traveled there. Wonderful

Here, here! Hubby and I have discussed how Vegas seems to be all over the Travel Channel of late. I wonder if there are some kickbacks changing hands here . . . ? Between the poker shows and the Vegas shows, I'm beginning to feel as though non-gamblers are a distinct minority!

10 Best is sometimes a good show, but it seems that they re-run it over and over, and some of the footage in it appears to have been lifted from other programs.

Where are the shows about Europe, South America, India, etc.? The world is such a big place; it's difficult for me to understand why they cover the same destinations over and over. Rachel Ray almost does a better job with her "$40 a Day."

Discovery Communications Inc. owns the Travel Channel and is, in turn, owned primarily by Liberty Media Corp. together with Cox and Advance/Newhouse. Other channels include all the Discovery Channels (like "Wings," etc.), Animal Planet, AND the Discovery retail stores that have popped up in your local mall. A network of "symbiotic" relationships with entertainment venues is highly probable.

Oh yes, the Travel Channel is so lame! The only show worth watching is Great Hotels. $40 a day is good but isn't that on the Food Channel? Everytime I check to see whats on it's the World Poker tour or something about RV's or Vegas, boring. I kind of like Road Trip, but it seems like it's never on.

GoTRavel, my DH LOVED that show because of the bimbos and Albies strange adventures,,,I liked when he was walking around 9/10th nude all the time . Diana, it did seem BIZarre, yes? How about when his dog died? Now THAT was a travel show! Speaking of food and travel, how about a Cook's Tour? Sometimes I would run out of the room when he started eating some of his weird food finds !!!! Made me gag. Now that is one stange show IMO.

Another Samantha Brown fan here! I LOVE Great Hotels!

I see more travel related interesting shows on the Food Network when they visit restaurants in different cities ($40 a day, Cook's Tour, etc). I will, however, admit that I've enjoyed an episode or two of Get Packing on Travel Channel.

After reading all these posts I am so glad that we have never hooked up to cable T.V. (of course, we have never had the option as it's not available where we live). The Travel Channel is one of the channels I thought I was missing, since I don't have cable. Sounds like I'm not missing much.

We have been very fortunate that our local PBS station (WVIA-44) has been airing Rick Steves (oh God, I've mentioned his name) and Globetrekker on Sunday afternoons, for several years now. I only hope that Rick Steves has some new segments this season...it's beginning to get old. >-

We recently started getting hi-def and there are some really great travel shows on there. One that comes to mind is called Road Trip with Tina Maddigan. Anyone seen it?

Lonely Planet and Albie were armchair travel at its best. A bit of carefree escapism and youthful wanderlust that has passed most of us by. No, I don't watch the Travel Channel anymore.

If TV was any good, fewer of us would be online.

Yep, it's become the "Las Vegas and Hawaii Show". One great big, loooong commercial for those two destinations.

Terrible (not the destinations, the channel...).

I look forward to PBS's Globe Trekker each week. Usually great stuff.
