Who cares for your pets?

I'm curious. When you absolutely can't take your pets with you, who cares for them? Friends, family, pet sitter, Kennel? How much do you have to pay, and, what services do you get. Finally, what part of the country are you in? I'm wondering how prices and services differ geographically.

There have been two recent, lengthy posts on this topic - one on the US board and one on the Europe board. If you are looking for specific information a fast way to find it is to refer to those threads.

We live in Toronto...have a med-lg dog (70 pounds) and our kennell charges $40 a day which adds up quickly. We have no family or friends close by who want the invasion of our big furry guy so have no choice. We are travelling to Italy for 2 1/2 weeks in the fall and our neighbour's daughter has agreed to stay in the house and look after him. I will pay her $30 a day. She recently moved home and is looking for a job and needs a break from her parents and I think they will also welcome the respite...haha. There may be someone you work with who would wlecome a chance to house sit???

Ok message board police. I'm kinda new to all of this. Please explain how I have broken the unpublished rules. I thought it was like tv...if you're not interested you change the channel.
I first posted my question to the Costa Rican board. I will be traveling there and had been messaging with several people there. I figured I would be hearing from a different group of travelers on this board. I'm interested in hearing from lots of different people. Is that a crime???

Oh dear. Senior moment. My apologies. I THOUGHT I posted on the Costa Rica board. Egg ALL OVER my face!

How is your petsitting business coming along cactushugger?

cactushugger Aug 16th, 2006 12:26 PM

cybor, Thanks for asking. I'm not sure how to answer. The problem is I don't want to be TOO successful. I would like to work just two weeks per month. But, because I'm just starting out, I feel the need to take most of the jobs I'm offered...sort of a hedge against slow times. But, this is SUPPOSED to be a retirement job. I guess I need to go through a full year to see when my slow times will be. Then I can be more selective in my assignments. Having said all of that, I think it is going very well. It's all word of mouth and I've got three new clients this week. EEEK!
