White Plains info

Lived in White Plains in early 70's and want to visit. I know everything will be different so does anyone have info re hotels or B&Bs and any good tips on what to see in area or north of there? I remember there are lots of interesting towns and beautful countryside nearby.

Yvonne: I know of at least 2 White Plains - one in NY, the other in MD. Are you referring to either of these or another one?

If you are referring to White Plains, NY, I really don't think there is anything in the area.

I assume that you mean White Plains NY since you posted this on the New York board.

White Plains itself is not that great. It does have a couple of shopping malls, and a few good bars and such but other than that not much to see (mostly residential, some beautiful, some not so beautiful). Tarrytown which is near by has several Mansions to visit (Lyndhurst, Kyuit (or something like that, one of the Rockefeller estate to name a few).

During the summer months nearby towns like Tarrytown and Peekskill have hudson riverboat tours. There are several quaint towns around the area including Rye, Tarrytown, Hastings on Hudson, Irvington etc. They have shops and such to visit and explore.

In the summer and fall another good place to travel too from the White Plains area would be North to Bear Mountain. There is an Inn there that has great Sunday brunches, lots of hiking, and other outdoor actvities.

As far as places to stay, I can't really give you a first hand recommendation because I haven't really stayed in any of the hotels. But White Plains has a Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza. Just on the boarder is the Rye Hilton (which looks really nice). Back towards Tarrytown along Rte. 119 your'll find a Hampton Inn, a Marriott and a Court Yard Marriott and hotel/motels of that sort. I also believe that there is a Hilton in Tarrytown.

Hopefully someone else can give you more specifics. The area is nice and a great commute into NYC if you want to take a day in go in.

Most B&B's are further up the Hudson than White Plains, though I've heard of (but haven't visited) the Alexander Hamilton House B&B in Croton on Hudson The hotels Karen mentioned (and maybe also a Renaissance hotel, also in White Plains) are pretty nice.
