DH and I did the last year and really enjoyed it. The views are incredible. I don't remember what it cost, but it was worth it. I would say it is a must do.

Boy, the price has gone up since 2001. Despite reserving way in advance, cruise ships were in port and we had to take a late afternoon ride. It got foggy. There wasn't much of a view. At that price, I'd have to think twice about it. Our trip was late July that year.

LOTS of people rent cars instead. Four of us rode in a car for less than what the train would cost for one person. The road pretty much follows the same route but you can stop when you want and go even further if you want. There is an Avis in Skagway, walking distance from the docks at a hotel--don't remember the name.

thank you, all! based on your answers and our reluctance to spring for $250, we just rented a car! thanks again!

Here's another vote for renting a car!

We rented a car (May '09, Avis with an AAA discount for $102 & another $12 for gas) and drove up to Emerald Lake and back. Glad we did it! The drive was beautiful and easy, and we stopped to watch two young bears cross the road about 30 feet in front of us!! (Yes, we kept our distance and gave them plenty of space.)

Here's a good link for stops along the way:

Also, here's a guide you can buy:

Reid Falls near the cemetary on the way out of town was nice and a very short hike.

We stopped at the Carcross Post Office (Canada) to get our passports stamped (just for fun), and ate lunch at Spirit Lake restaurant. (The food was just OK, expensive and the service was sloooooooow.) Not sure of other eating options.

Don't miss Emerald Lake--I've never seen anything like it!

Carcross Desert was nice, too for a quick stop or short hike:

Have a great time!
