White Oak Inn, Danville, OH

I don't think I've ever written a trip report on the U.S. forum, but this is a reminder that, sometimes, great vacations can be found in your own backyard.

To celebrate our 40th anniversary last weekend I booked a two-night package at the White Oak Inn, which is only about an hour from our home in Ohio. It sits at the entrance to Amish country, which we've visited a few times before.

The Inn was peaceful, lovely, set in a beautiful country area and the hosts were very, very nice. What I didn't expect was the wonderful food! Included in the package was one four-course dinner and two breakfasts, as well as a cheese and fruit tray and chocolates. Yvonne, the owner, made an unbelievable dinner of sherried asparagus soup, spinach salad, shrimp in pasta and a chocolate blueberry cake for dessert. They don't serve alcohol but we were welcome to bring our own wine, which they uncorked and served.

Breakfast was just as good. Homemade muffins, stuffed french toast... it was a great way to start the day.

We drove into Millersport then Berlin and did some antique-hunting and had lunch at a neat diner in Berlin (Cindy's, I think). On our second day we drove to Mt. Vernon and did some more antiquing, with a stop at the Pink Cupcake for, what else?

It rained for the three days we were "vacationing," but it was so relaxing! We've vowed to look up more B&B's in the state and do an occasional weekend throughout the year.

Do you explore your area for more than just day trips?
