Has anyone visited? See any male moose? If so, where. The books say some spots are abundant. Where did you stay in the area. Anyone visit the COG railway?

The best way to see moose is a "moose tour". We went on one in Gorham, NH. No web page, reserve at 800-367-3364. They have years of experience - know where, what time to go, to spot them. We saw a lot of moose! Including a male wooing a female (she rejected him) and a moose family (mom, dad, baby). They even bring spotlights for photo ops and know how to avoid chasing them off before you can snap your photos.

With a web search, you can determine where and when to find them yourself, but this is not recommended (can be dangerous). For example, they tend to wander onto roads/highways at dusk. And, you will not notice them until it is too late, and they will not scamper off as you drive toward them.

We've also done the Cog Railway. Frankly, I do not recommend it. If you want to go to the top of Mount Washington, take the van which leaves from Lower Barlett. The drivers are expert and chock full of informative and amusing commentary. The railway is nerve-wracking and the "experiencd" is quite diminished by coal soot, exhaust, fumes...

The best place to see Moose in NH is Pittsburg. Take "Moose Alley" (Route 3) north from Pittsburg to the Canadian border. I've never NOT seen a moose when I've been there.
Just across the Canadian border by maybe a mile, is a neat place called Magnetic Hill. Park your car, put it in neutral, and your car goes uphill backwards!

After you take the drive up the MW auto road put the bumpah stickah you got on your bumpah. This always attracts bullwinkle,better during the rutting season. Be on the look out for fresh made moose turd pies.For gifts get the dear ones some moose droping jewelry.Avilable in most stores in the area.

I too recommend the van tour. Very scenic and informative. I would only drive myself if we didn't have the tendency {we do} to white-knuckle it to the top and back. Much more relaxing and enjoyable to leave the driving to someone else IMO!

We did not care for the cog railway for the aforementioned reasons plus a time limit at the top if we wanted our seats on the trip back. Some people hike to the top and then ride the Cog down. We chose a perfectly clear day to go and this I would advise no matter which way you get to the top.
Despite living in the state, we have failed to spend much time in the mountains. There are some wonderful hiking trails although most tourists choose the Flume for a hiking adventure. You can get a hiking trail guide to help you choose a good trail. If you stay in the Meredith NH such as the Inn at the Falls, you could have the convenience of Lake Winnipesaukee and be just a short drive away from the mountains.
I have never seen a moose although some of our neighbors have had one in their backyard. If you choose a popular moose area, stay alert for moose on the road.

I have done the MH Auto road three times, all tonnes of fun for myself; as I really enjoy off-road driving, rallies, etc. But for others less interested in driving along cliffs on gravel road that's wide enough for just 1.5 cars, then let somebody else do the driving.
