White Mountain Hotel & Resort
 

Has anyone stayed at this resort? Friends from Ohio are coming to hike oct 2002 and we want to reserve someplace nice with all the amenities but still with charm. Is this too near all the hype in North Conway or off the road enough and away from traffic enough to be OK? Am worried about traffic Columbus Day weekend also. Is it impossible? Lots of questions! Any other suggestions?

Sue: My husband and I stayed there about a month ago. The place is big, beautiful and full of charm. Completely redone several years ago, it has a golf course, tennis courts, and lots more. Not too near No. Conway, but can't tell you exactly how far...maybe a half hour?? It sits back, well off the road and isn't in "the middle" of anything. It IS extremely expensive...you pay for all that charm! I would suggest you check out their website. I don't have it written down, but do a search on the internet and you'll find it. It is very informative. They offer at least one other hotel as part of an offer, I think, and you can use the facilities at the Mt. Washington. The other hotel is less expensive but just across the street. If your friends are hikers, this area is right in the middle of lots of trails, as well as the Mt. Washington Auto Road where they can ride to the top either by car or the Cog Railway...or hike! Hope I was of some help.

The prior poster is refering to the Mt Washington Hotel. The White Mountain Hotel is a different resort. Never stayed there but it has gotten very favorable reviews from 2 different sets of friends. Its near N.Conway but away from the madness. I've driven by a few times and the setting is beautiful and prices are fairly reasonable too. Maybe someone who has stayed there will reply also. <BR> <BR>Traffic on Columbus Day weekend will be intense but this hotel will be removed from it. It is actually sited on a little known back road that helps you move through the area without having to go through the shopping area of N.Conway. <BR> <BR>Another suggestion are the condos at the Nordic Village in Jackson NH. Very close to hiking trails, and far enough away from N.Conway. But I don't think you'll go wrong at the White Mountain.

I have stayed at the White Mountain Hotel on many different occassions. As far as traffic you can be assured it will be busy, unless you are going past the middle of the month. The hotel is very nice inside and also has a year round outdoor heated pool. Lovely view from the dining room and food is decent. <BR>You may be interested in looking into Jackson, NH which is only about 15 minutes from where you are staying and much more quaint and New England like. There are some really nice older hotels there such as the Wentworth, Eagle Mountain, Christmas Farm Inn. There is another called the Wildcat Inn which is more rustic but has a good dining room and a pub also. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the replys. Can anyone tell me if the road the resort is on allows you to avoid that awful traffic strip in North Conway when you want to leave the resort to do other things?

The White Mountain Hotel is on 'West side road' this is the road that 'locals' use to bypass the traffic congestion on main st North conway. <BR> <BR>Therefore the location is peaceful and allows you to avoid the worst of the traffic.
