The White Cliffs of Dover. They were not impressive at all.

I'll probably catch a bunch of flak for this, but ... my big "blah" experience was Hoover Dam. Sure, it's a huge engineering masterpiece, but I was expecting to see millions of tons of rushing, pounding water. On the guided tour, what we saw just looked like a big drainage ditch. Where do you go to see the view they show in the photographs? I had a much more exciting view when they showed the dam on "The Simpsons"!

I agree whole-heartedly with "vacation dreamer". The road to Hana and the Seven Sacred Pools were very disappointing and a waste of time, especially compared with the other beautiful things to see on Maui.
I was very disappointed in New Orleans as well.

I'll join the Mona Lisa folks--it's so small!! My family summered on the Cape(Cod)when I was a child, and it was great. It's too crowded now.

I agree with the Plymouth Rock posters. I'm just glad we didn't go way out of our way to see it. However, I did enjoy Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon and Mona Lisa. Perhaps you just have to be in the right mood, be there at the right time, etc.

Disney World when I was 11 years old. I've been on better rides at the local fireman's carnival. And the crowds ...Have talked the Grandparents into taking the kids when they want to go.

Waimea Canyon on Kaua'i--it just looks like a big ravine to me. But the Kalalau Valley views at the end of the road are awesome in my opinion, and i absolutely love Kaua'i. i just don't see what is so special about the canyon.

Disneyland. I was in Orange County for another reason, and planned to go there with another adult, since neither of us had ever been. Our luggage got left off our connecting flight, so we ended up not getting to the park until after dark. We were both highly disappointed. For kids (or adults), among the California attractions, I would recommend either the San Diego Zoo or Universal Studios instead.

TedTurner, surely you couldn't have been expecting much from the big ball of twine? :)

Mona Lisa is too small???????!!! Huh?

BuffaloGirl Apr 29th, 2004 04:08 AM

Wow, I'm surprised by some of the comments - especially the ones about the Grand Canyon. It took my breath away! Different strokes for different folks, that's for sure.

My "You gotta be kidding" moment was the San Diego zoo. Been there, done that.

I live in Buffalo and have seen Niagara Falls hundreds of times. They never cease to amaze me.

LLinda - that's funny I felt the exact same way about the Mona Lisa. I guess it was the big build up.

Salem, Mass. Don't know what I was expecting but not just a suburb of Boston.

I remember driving east to west in Iowa and seeing a succession of signs announcing a "scenic overlook just X miles ahead!" The suspense increased as we counted down 2 miles, 1 mile, 2000 feet, only to pull over and find ourself on a mump from which you could see some of the Missouri river and more road.

I remember a friend's comment when we lived in Glenview, IL. He'd moved there from Hawaii and we were marveling that he wouldn't want to stay in Hawaii forever. "Oh, Hawaii is just Glenview with a plant service!"

The Audobon Zoo in New Orleans was disappointing. It was so highly rated by guidebooks and online sites that we chose to go there instead of doing a swamp tour.

Byrd Apr 29th, 2004 06:36 AM

I have to laugh at the reports of disappointment at the Grand Canyon. I had just the opposite reaction!

We were driving home from California and made a spur-of-the-moment decision to detour up and see the Canyon.

I remember thinking that we were going to see an interesting site, but one that was actually just a big dusty hole in the ground.

We arrived just at sunset and pulled off at the first overlook.

There are not enough adjectives to describe what I felt. There in front of and below us was the most beautiful, spectacular, "Grandest" sight I'd ever seen!

We drove on the El Tovar, miraculously they had a cancellation and we got a room. So we saw the sunrise, too.

So much for the dusty hole in the ground.

Byrd

Another vote for New Orleans. Little Jazz in evidence, lots of Rythme and Bass pounding out onto the streets, agressive leering (not just fun bead-stuff) and all aimed at separating you from your tourist dollar with a minimum of effort or courtesy - one server actually complained that her 15% tip wasn't large enough (it was around $5) and should be "at least 20%"!

Other people like the place, it leaves me cold.

doc_ Apr 29th, 2004 09:38 AM

The view from the top of the Grand Canyon is awesome. The only one more impressive is the view from the bottom, and all the sights on the way down.

As exciting as Vegas is to some, I just did'nt get the same feeling and couldn't wait to board the redeye flight outta there.

The Everglades. Took boat ride - saw a bunch of mosquitos, some water bugs, a few small birds - no manatees, big fish, big birds, mammals, gators.
