Which of these three musicals should we see?
 

Coming to New York for a weekend and may have time to see two or three shows. We have narrowed our choices to the following:

Sister Act
Priscilla: Queen of the Dessert
Catch Me if You Can.

We actually saw all three movies and enjoyed them all. If we have time for only two of the three which should we skip? (Of course we would like to see Book Of Morman but are not willing to pay the scalper prices for that show.)

We saw Catch Me If You Can when it previewed in Seattle and we liked it a lot. The leading man, young Aaron Tveit was great, Norbet Leo Butz won the Emmy for his performance, and Tom Wopat is always first rate. This is a very entertaining show, and I feel Tveit was robbed that he didn't get nominated for a Tony.

Just saw "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" and loved every minute of it. We got half price tickets at Tkts for a matinee.

I'd pick one of the first two.

My vote is for Catch Me and Sister Act, both were really enjoyable and got discounted seats for both.

If I had to miss one, I'd probably miss Priscilla. Ironically, that's the only one of the three that I've seen, but having seen it, it was quite enjoyable but has absolutely no original music. That's why I'd give it a miss.

Sister Act has definitely gotten the best reviews of the three.

If you liked Priscilla as a movie, then you just might be disappointed with the theater version. We loved the movie, but were very, very, very disappointed in the Broadway production.
As a general comment, there are better musicals on Broadway than your three finalists. Billy Elliot, for one, is a superb show.
Doug is right about Sister Act having gotten the best reviews...by far.

Saw Billy Elliott two years ago. Also have seen Memphis, Million Dollar Quartet, Chicago, even Adams Family (Chicago preview).

Surprised that no one (including myself) has yet recommended the revival of Anything Goes. It's selling out, so get tickets now. It's one of the best things currently playing.

Loved Priscilla - even better than the movie,. I would tend to drop Sister Act - the movie was awful - haven;t heard anything good about the show.

Oh - and I would pick Anything Goes above any of the others - but I'm a Coward aficionado.

Anything Goes is a great idea. I will check out the tickets. Do you think it is discounted like the others?

Huh? I thought your choices were limited to the three shows you mentioned.

If a good alternate show is suggested, I am open-minded. I haven't bought any tickets yet so I am not committed to any show. But thank you for your previous suggestion.

<i>Anything Goes</i> is arguably superior to the three other shows mentioned. We saw it May 29 and, though we rarely return to a musical (<i>The Producers</i> was the last I can recall), we're seeing it again on August 21, taking a nine-year-old who's never seen a Broadway show. However, <i>AG</i> is not discounted unless one buys a Roundabout Theater package of three shows. Worth full price, IMO.

Don't know if you're interested in non-musicals, but <i>War Horse</i> was fantastic.

Thanks for all your help. We finally purchased tickets (using broadwaybox.com discounts) for Sister Act and Catch Me if You Can, as well as for the revival of Follies.

I know you will enjoy both shows, particularly on discount. We thought both of them were great. I can't comment on Follies since I haven't see it. Let us know what you think after you see them.

Some very interesting comments above, but of course we all have different tastes.
I've seen all three.
I liked Catch Me If You Can the least. I found Aaron Tveit had a great voice but totally lacked the stage charisma necessary to believe his character. And while I liked the "theatrical" staging of the show and its plot, I found the whole thing rather tedious other than the one GREAT number which Leo Norbert Does (the one they did on the Tonys and in my opinion the only one good enough to "sell" the show).

Sister Act is great fun. It is different from the movie in that it is all original music, not the songs used in the movie, and has been moved to Disco era Philadelphia. It is lively, energetic, and great fun.

Priscilla is clearly not everyone's cup of tea. The idea of lip-syncing (which relates the the idea that the Australian drag queens do in fact lip-sync) bothers a lot of people, and yes, it's all old recycled disco songs (unlike new ones in Sister Act). But the costumes and the scenery -- well, especially the amazing bus of moving lights -- are really over the top and fun.

Like bspielman, I actually thought Anything Goes is a better production than any of the others listed, and I can't wait to see the Follies revival -- the last one was sort of a dirge, but this one promises to be great.

The bottom line? Much of what you like depends almost as much on the mood you're in at the time as it does your personal taste. But I'm sure you'll enjoy all you see, DMG.

I'm hoping that Anything Goes and Priscilla will eventually have touring productions that will get to Chicago or Florida where I can see them. (Of course, I won't get to see Sutton Foster!) Likewise the Book of Mormon will eventually tour or it will still be in New York when I get back.
